Pixelmator Team extends RAW support with over 30 new camera models

Hey everyone, we’ve got some exciting news! Less than a year after adding extended support for compressed Fujifilm RAWs to Photomator and Pixelmator Pro, we’re happy to announce that we are adding support for even more RAW file formats. Starting today, you will be able to preview, open, and edit RAW images from more than 30 new camera models in Photomator and Pixelmator Pro. This includes camera models from GoPro, Samsung, and others that aren’t natively supported by Apple apps like Preview or Photos.

Extended RAW support in Photomator 3.3.15

Adding support for these new RAW formats was quite the challenge, but it also brought some exciting new possibilities. For example, to open RAW photos from GoPro cameras, we first needed to convert them to a universal RAW image format – DNG. While there were already existing DNG converters we could use for this, we wanted to be sure we offer the best possible quality for displaying RAW images. That’s why we decided to create a custom DNG converter from scratch. Built using Swift programming language, it’s designed to work seamlessly with Apple devices and lays the groundwork for potentially adding support for DNG export in the future. If this is a feature you’d be interested in, just let us know!

And here is a full list of camera models you can now work with in Photomator and Pixelmator Pro:

GoPro (extended support in the File browser only)

Hero5 Black, Hero6 Black, Hero7 Black, Hero8 Black, Hero9 Black, Fusion, Hero11 Black, Hero12 Black

Samsung

NX mini, NX1, NX5, NX20, NX30, NX210, NX300, NX300M, NX500, NX1000, NX1100, NX2000, NX3000, NX3300, WB2000, EX1, EX2F

Fujifilm

X100VI, GFX100, GFX100 II, GFX50S II

Panasonic

DC-G110

Nikon

Z f (14-bit RAW)

If your camera model is not listed above or you don’t see it in the full list of camera models supported by Photomator or Pixelmator Pro, you can suggest new formats by uploading sample RAW files using this form. We want to give a huge shout-out to everyone who has filled out the form over the past year and helped us focus on the most needed RAW formats. We’d love to keep this going in the future!

As always, this update is free to all existing Photomator and Pixelmator Pro users and you can grab it in the App Store at the link below.

Pixelmator Pro 3.6 supercharges masking with AI and vector masks

Pixelmator Pro 3.6, codenamed Archipelago, is here and brings incredible new masking capabilities, including AI-powered background masks, support for vector masks, new on-canvas mask controls, and much more. These new features are designed to make working with masks easier for beginners and faster for pros, so everyone can make the most of nondestructive editing when creating their own designs.

Watch overview

All-New Masking Experience

Masking in Pixelmator Pro 3.6 has been reengineered from the ground up to offer quicker and more convenient ways to add and refine masks. For example, you can now instantly mask a layer or create a mask from a selection by simply double-clicking it on the canvas using the Arrange tool. You can then effortlessly resize and reposition the mask, or even adjust its corners, making tasks like rounding image corners or cropping individual layers in multi-layer compositions much faster and easier.

For refining masks, you’ll now find all the necessary tools conveniently located at the bottom of your screen. The new on-canvas controls appear whenever you select or create a mask, allowing you to quickly adjust its transparency or edge softness, invert it, add new masks, and more. And, with support for multiple masks, you can work with as many masks as you need, using blend modes to combine them in different ways.

To showcase how you can use the new masking features in your own creative workflows, we’ve prepared a tutorial on creating an eye-catching design with transparent text — all while using masks. Check out the tutorial on our YouTube page.

AI Background Masks

The new AI-powered Hide Background feature now lets you nondestructively remove image backgrounds with just a single click. The intelligent subject detection algorithm automatically finds the subject in an image and adds a precise background mask to hide everything else. You can always hide or reveal any additional details of the subject or background by simply refining the mask. This means your original image always remains intact and unchanged, giving you the freedom to make adjustments and experiment with edits as much as you like.

Vector Masks

The new vector masks in Pixelmator Pro make it easy to quickly mask layers into specific shapes, opening up new editing workflows. Vector masks consist of paths and use shapes to hide or reveal parts of layers. When you add a vector mask, the areas inside the vector shape remain visible and the areas outside are hidden, creating a cookie-cutter-like effect. To mask a layer, simply select a shape from the special new Mask menu at the top of the layers sidebar, or create a mask from scratch using the Pen tools. You can also easily switch between different mask shapes by selecting them from the Shape browser conveniently located at the bottom of the screen.

Vector masks are also fully editable, allowing you to adjust each individual point just like you would when editing regular shapes, and offer resolution-independent scaling, making them perfect for designs that need to maintain high quality at any size, like graphics created for web or print.

We’re really excited to bring you these powerful new features that make working with masks faster and easier than ever. As always, the update is completely free to all existing Pixelmator Pro users. And, If you haven’t tried Pixelmator Pro yet, be sure to give it a go. It has just hit an impressive 43,000 5-star ratings on the Mac App Store!

Photomator update introduces an all-new export with previews and watermarks on Mac

We’re thrilled to introduce a completely redesigned export feature on Photomator for Mac. This update adds export preview, an easy-to-use watermarking tool for protecting your photos, and Quick Look integration for instant full-size previews and image sharing. With these new features, exporting your photos will be a breeze!

Export Previews

From now on, you will see an export preview in the export settings, allowing you to quickly view photos before exporting them. This eliminates the need to repeatedly export, check, and re-export photos until you achieve the desired result. Now, the actual export is the final step in your workflow. For a full-size preview, you can also use Quick Look, available via an icon in the Export view or by simply pressing the Space bar. This feature lets you view photos in full size, making it particularly useful for checking how the watermarked images look before exporting them.

Watermarks

The latest update also brings watermarks to Mac. You can easily protect your photos by applying text or image watermarks in the Photomator Export settings. This update offers advanced yet easy-to-use watermarking settings, letting you add a shadow to your text or logo, tile a watermark to create a repeating pattern throughout the photo, and much more. With a bit of creativity, this feature is also powerful enough to be used as a type tool in Photomator!

Tip

To export multiple watermarked photos at once, select the photos in the photo or file library and press the Command-E keyboard shortcut.

This is a (not so) minor update for Photomator, bringing major improvements to the exporting experience on Mac. Make sure to update to the latest version to take advantage of these amazing new features!

Photomator update brings 5x faster file browsing and 2x smaller sidecar files

Starting today, you’ll notice a significant increase in speed when browsing photos in the Files browser on your Mac – photo thumbnails will now load up to 5x faster! Other great news is that we’ve optimized edit saving on all devices, with large edits now requiring half the storage space, and simple color adjustments being saved directly to the original photos in the Photos library.

Faster File Browser on Mac

Following the initial launch of the powerful Files browser at the beginning of this year, we’ve been continuously working on improving its performance to bring you an even faster photo browsing and editing experience. Today’s update brings an up to 5x faster thumbnail loading after importing new folders and even faster thumbnail loading for previously previewed folders. These improvements ensure that you can browse and edit photos faster than ever, while seamlessly transitioning between different folders.

Smaller Sidecar Files

We’re excited to bring another major improvement that will significantly free up your storage space – sidecar files are now 2x smaller when editing in both the Photos and Files browsers. You’ll notice a big difference in the file size of your edits, especially if you’re working on tasks such as upscaling, denoising, debanding, or retouching. Given that these tasks are typically very storage-demanding, we’re thrilled to share that we’ve cut the size of such sidecar files in half. Additionally, when making simple color adjustments in the Photos browser, the edits will now be saved directly to the photo. This improvement significantly reduces the storage space required for storing color edits, which is particularly beneficial when working with larger files, such as RAW or HDR images.

We hope this update will take your photo editing workflows to new levels of speed. If you’re already a user, enjoy the enhanced features, and if you haven’t tried Photomator yet, take advantage of our one-week free trial to see for yourself how editing photos with Photomator is a breeze.

Pixelmator Pro brings text editing in PDFs and adds a collection of bento grid templates

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 has just been released, now letting you edit text in PDFs just like regular text layers, including in Apple PDFs exported from Safari, Keynote, or Pages. The update also adds the ability to create freely customizable outlines around text layers and adds a new collection of bento grid templates, ideal for showcasing product updates or new app features.

Text Editing in PDFs

In one of the recent Pixelmator Pro updates, we’ve added support for vector PDFs, letting you import image, shape, and text elements as separate layers. Now, we’re expanding this support even further by making it possible to edit the imported text elements as regular text layers. This means you can now easily replace, format, and style any existing text in PDFs using all your favorite Pixelmator Pro tools.

Typically, text in PDF documents is not directly editable. Instead, it’s stored as vector shapes to keep documents looking consistent across various platforms and apps. To make text editable again, Pixelmator Pro extracts the different types of data embedded in the original PDF which then lets it recover the original text content, fonts, and formatting. Even if some of these elements are missing, for instance, if the original font is not installed on your Mac, you can still import the text, select a different font, and continue with your edits.

Extended Support for Apple PDFs

The new text editing capabilities in PDF files now allow for even more seamless integration between macOS iWork apps and Pixelmator Pro. Whether you are creating a presentation in Keynote, writing a document in Pages, or working in Safari, you can export your work to PDF and continue editing it in Pixelmator Pro. All of the text in your project will remain fully editable and keep its original fonts, including the SF Pro font that is used throughout the Apple ecosystem.

Take a look at how much smoother importing PDFs created using Keynote works now compared to the previous Pixelmator Pro version.

Customizable Text Strokes

The Style tool in Pixelmator Pro has also been improved, bringing an easy way to create custom outlines around text layers. You now have the option to add strokes inside, center, or outside of the text, choose from various stroke ends and corners, and even add dashed strokes to your text. With these new features, you can experiment with different style combinations to create beautiful typography designs in your projects. The nondestructive styling options also make it easy to stack multiple different strokes of different styles together and rearrange them at any point, while keeping your text fully editable.

Bento Grid Templates

In the fresh new Bento Grid templates collection, you’ll find 12 eye-catching templates for web, social media, and more — all featuring the wildly popular Japanese lunch box-inspired design. The templates are perfect for highlighting exciting new product features, announcing app updates, or showcasing other creations in a neat and organized way. Each template also includes a variety of alternative color palettes to perfectly match your product or a specific theme.

And that wraps up all the new features. If you’d like to try them out yourself, head over to the Mac App Store to download the latest update. As always, it’s free to all existing Pixelmator Pro users.

Photomator 3.3 introduces a powerful new file browser on Mac

Photomator 3.3 brings a powerful file browser, built using native macOS technologies. This makes it easier and faster than ever to browse and edit photos, not just on your Mac, but also on external drives and cloud services. After extensive testing and optimizations, we’re more than thrilled to announce that this highly-awaited feature is finally available on Mac.

Watch video on YouTube

Native Features

The all-new file browser, designed using native macOS technologies, offers an exceptionally fast and seamless photo browsing and editing experience. Its integration of native features, along with a familiar interface, makes it incredibly easy to use. The new file browser includes such native features as drag and drop for quickly importing folders and photos, even if you need to import thousands of them at a time, a native Share menu for effortless photo sharing, and much more.

Being built upon the Apple File System, Photomator’s file browser also saves your storage space. It doesn’t catalog your photos or store their duplicates and automatically syncs the edits with the original file. This also ensures a clutter-free photo editing experience. Another small, yet significant, feature is its handling of photo duplicates within the file browser – when you duplicate photos, say for comparing edits, they don’t consume additional storage space.

External Drives and Cloud Locations

Edit photos stored across various cloud services such as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive, as well as SSDs, NAS devices, or SD cards, with the same ease as editing photos stored on your Mac. When you disconnect an SD card or external storage after editing, Photomator lets you seamlessly continue editing right from where you left off once you reconnect the storage device, ensuring an uninterrupted editing workflow.

Saving Edits

The latest update introduces a new edit-saving feature, allowing you to save edits alongside the original file, without modifying the original itself. It ensures that all your edits are in place when you reconnect to external storage or cloud services and also helps save storage space, which is a significant advantage, especially when working with RAW photos.

Photomator’s photo editing is designed to be nondestructive across all photo locations – whether your photos are on a Mac, external storage, or a cloud service, you’ll be able to preserve the original photo and revert the edits at any time.

Syncing Edits With iPhone and iPad

Easily view edits on all devices by simply syncing them through iCloud Drive. When you open edits from Mac on your iPhone and iPad, you’ll need to grant folder access to Photomator. To grant the access, open a photo, select Give Access at the bottom, then open the folder containing the photo. Once you’ve granted access, you’ll be able to view the edits within the folder in the future.

We are thrilled to announce the addition of the powerful file browser to Photomator, and we can’t wait for you to experience its native capabilities. This update is available for free to all existing users. If you’re new to Photomator, you can explore all the features and save a limited number of edits for free by downloading it from the Mac App Store.

Photomator and Pixelmator to be available on Apple Vision Pro from day one

We’re excited to share that Photomator and Pixelmator will be available on Apple Vision Pro starting from February 2nd. From day one, you’ll be able to access Photomator and Pixelmator as iPad apps in the Vision Pro App Store. We’re also planning to continue optimizing them specifically for visionOS to ensure you get the best image editing experience on this powerful new platform.

Compatible as iPad Apps

Our goal is to make sure that all the features found in Photomator and Pixelmator on iPad are readily accessible on Apple Vision Pro right from the start. This means that once you get your hands on Apple Vision Pro, you’ll have full access to all the tools available in our apps, including AI tools and even the Repair tool. And, we’re currently working to bring HDR editing support to Vision Pro, too.

A significant advantage offered by Apple Vision Pro is its infinite creative space, which means you won’t be restricted by your display size. Even if you’re using a Mac with the largest display or multiple Studio Displays, they can’t replicate the experience of the enormous creative space provided by Apple Vision Pro. When working with Photomator or Pixelmator on Vision Pro, you’ll be able to easily resize your window and work within this vast creative environment with fewer screen size limitations.

Vision Pro as Mac Display

You’ll be able to view even Mac apps, including Pixelmator Pro, on Apple Vision Pro by bringing your Mac into Apple Vision Pro through Mac Virtual Display. This feature brings an exciting possibility to easily view designs from Pixelmator Pro on the enormous Apple Vision Pro display.

Spatial Photography

The introduction of Apple Vision Pro brings forth an exciting feature – spatial photos. Spatial photography introduces a whole new level of depth to your images, making them appear incredibly lifelike. We’re eagerly looking forward to seeing how spatial photography evolves, as we believe it will provide an incredibly immersive photo-viewing experience.

We are thrilled about the future of spatial computing, and we believe it holds immense potential for designers, photographers, and other creatives. We’re also delighted for Photomator and Pixelmator to be among the first apps you’ll experience on Apple Vision Pro, and we can’t wait to launch them as native visionOS apps in the future!

Pixelmator Team adds watermarking to Photomator and opens spots for file browser beta testing

Today, we’re happy to announce we’re checking off one more item from the Photomator roadmap — we’ve just released Photomator 3.3, adding a new photo watermarking feature that brings a simple yet powerful way to add watermarks to your photos on iPhone and iPad.

New Watermarking Feature

The new watermarking feature in Photomator lets you easily protect your creative work from being used without your permission by applying custom watermarks to your photos. When exporting photos, you can add watermarks as standalone text or images, or tile them repeatedly throughout the entire photo for an added layer of security.

Watermarks can also be incredibly useful for building your personal brand. Adding custom signatures or logos to photos helps people recognize and find more of your work easily, which is especially great if you’re just starting out your photography career.

Watermark Presets and Batch Editing

Photomator comes with 6 ready-made watermark presets that you can quickly apply to photos by simply replacing placeholder text or images. If you have custom watermarks you use often, you can also save them as presets for a quick access the next time you’re exporting photos. And, for photographers editing large volumes of photos, we’ve made it possible to watermark entire albums at once with full batch editing support.

Advanced Watermark Customization

When you add watermarks, they become an integral part of a photo, so we made sure you can make them look just how you want them. For instance, using handy anchor points and the Offset slider, you can move watermarks around and position them on a photo. You also can play around with their size, opacity, add a shadow, tile them, and more. For text-based watermarks, you can change their color, pick a font, and make the text bold or italic.

This update is all about making watermarking fast and simple, saving you more time for capturing and editing photos. Download the latest Photomator update from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and try out the new watermarking feature with your photos.
