How to remove background

Hi, I automatically selected the background in a photo in order to remove it. What is the next step then? I am not succeeding. How can I proceed if the masking is not perfect? How can I manually remove background? I would like to put people in a different background.

I don't think Photomator has this ability. Maybe Pixelmator does? I'd also like a simple way to achieve this.
