Is it possible to shrink or expand a selection?

referring not to the pixels themselves, but to the actual selection. for example, if i select an irregular shape and i want to remove from the selection the outer 3 pixels from the perimeter of the selection, how do I proceed? I think in Photoshop it's expand/subtract selection or something like this.

After making the selection hold down shift+alt and click+drag from 1 of the 8 handles available.

Thanks for the tip. Doesn't quite do what I want, as you can see from the pic. I need more of a contraction than a scaling effect.

Maybe the work-around is to stroke the object with a different color, then select the interior of shape (excluding the stroke). Dunno.

If you choose "Select and Mask" you can use the "Expand" slider to grow and shrink the selection.
