I have a A4 300dpi b/w TIFF file scanned in MacOS's Image scanner, and on the filesystem is 33k. That's about 8.7M pixels, so it's good compression. I turned off "import" on general formats so that I could easily open, modify, and save files, but when I do so in Pixelmator, the file becomes about 280k. It looks like Pixelmator is quietly converting the image to 8-bit grayscale and saving it that way, even while I use the pixel paint tool to remove artifacts with #ffffff white. And there seems to be only 2 modes - grayscale and RGB.

Photoshop, by comparison, is ballooning the files to 1.1mb. So obviously it's adding a lot of cruft. But it's still keeping the file as 1-bit b/w.

Is there a way in Pixelmator to keep a b/w TIFF 1-bit b/w? Both in the interest of file size and maintaining the 1-bit graphic.
