Is there a straightforward way to fill a selected area? Paint bucket won't do it if the selected area is not a solid color.
In Paint.net the backspace key fills the selection with the currently selected foreground color (shift-backspace uses the currently selected background). It's extremely quick and useful. If there's something like that in Pixelmator Pro I haven't found it yet.
Fill selected area?

Have you tried clicking and dragging the Color Fill tool to increase its tolerance? Typically, the more you drag, the bigger the area is covered. And you can also fill selections or layers with the foreground or background color. To fill a layer with the foreground color, press Command + Backspace, and to fill with a background color, press Option + Backspace. Hope that helps!

That's what I was looking for!
Only one follow-up question: exactly where and how are the foreground color and the background color defined? It seems like, generally, every tool has its own color settings.

The foreground color follows the color setting of the Color Fill or the Paint tools. By pressing "X" on your keyboard, you can switch the foreground and the background colors around. You can also use the "D" key to reset the colors to default (black for the foreground and white for the background).

Incredibly helpful, thanks.
