1-bit color please

I want to reduce an image to pure black and white. A technique previously posted in this forum is to use the Posterize feature and drag the slider down to the lowest point, but that doesn’t work, I still have variously colored pixels in my image! How can I *really* convert an image to pure black and white pixels?? Thank you!
