Just updated to 3.3.3 and now if I'm using the paint tool within a selection, it just stops working, even if I unselect or create a new layer. I can close Pixelmator Pro and reopen it, and it works for a short period of time, and then just stops painting again.
update: smudge, soften, sharpen, erase, clone etc also do not work within the selection
