I would like to be able to push "shift" or some such other command to ensure that the spot I am cloning is level.

Like, I'm trying to digitally rebuild a doorframe.

It has a lot of good straight lines.

If I could just hold "shift" while cloning.

I would shave a few seconds off. Which, in the long run, is helpful.
