A better toolbar.

What features would you like to see in Pixelmator Pro?

Pixelmator just keeps getting better. More and more features all the time.

But, I feel as if the toolbar hasn't been considered in terms of user friendliness and purpose.

I get the impression that things end up in the toolbar when there's simply nowhere else to put them. For example, many of the ML based features have been found in the toolbar. This just adds confusion and places clashing icons and functions near each-other. The color switcher is a great feature but it doesn't fit with the rest of the toolbar icons. The ML features are great but I don't use enough of them individually to keep them on the toolbar if they're gonna be greyed out.

Inspired by Pages, I've created a mockup design of what I have in mind.

Ignoring a few visual glitches and some misaligned pixels, this pretty much represents what I wish Pixelmator UI was like. Also notice how the color selector has been split up. This avoids having to click that tiny arrow. And a user could add as many as they like! The toolbar functions are now smaller so more can fit.

The Pixelmator team should include combination toolbar functions. For example, document manipulation, and machine learning functions. Group these together and make them a single toolbar icon. Also, add way way more specific toolbar functions so the user can customize. Here's an example from Pages.

Thanks for the feedback, Zenith22. The default set of tools in the Pixelmator Pro toolbar and the way they are arranged is just a suggestion. You're free to add, remove, and space the icons in any way you like as the toolbar is customizable just like it is in Pages. I would agree, though, that more different tools and features to choose from would be nice. And grouping them based on their purpose is a neat idea, too. We already did that with Image Actions (screenshot below), so it sure is possible from the technical side of things. We can definitely keep this in mind!

I appreciate the response. Is that attached image a mock-up/development build or does the current version of Pixelmator Pro support middle justified toolbar icons? You could’ve also used many spaces next to each-other when customizing the toolbar but I’ve found that to be quite tedious. Regardless, I’m always happy to provide suggestions.

Yep, that's around 20 spaces from the right edge. I was just curious and wanted to experiment with what's currently possible. But I'm definitely with you on this one, setting this up wasn't the smoothest. Flexible Spaces would make things much easier but for them to work reliably, we'd most likely have to move the document name section out of the toolbar completely, just as it's shown in your mockup.

Let us show the name under each Toolbar icon.

If that's possible now. I cannot figure it out.

That's not possible right now but in our plans for future additions. :ok_hand:
