Photomator 3.3

Released on February 22, 2024

Photomator 3.3 introduces a powerful file browser built with native macOS technologies. It brings an incredibly fast and smooth photo browsing and editing experience on your Mac, external drives, and even cloud services.

The all-new file browser in Photomator is built using native macOS technologies, ensuring lightning-fast performance and a familiar interface that feels right at home on your Mac.

Enjoy a wide range of powerful photo editing tools, such as full-featured color adjustments, one-click AI tools, powerful batch editing, and even full HDR editing support when working with photos in the file browser.

Photo editing is completely nondestructive, letting you preserve the original photo and revert edits at any time.

Edit photos stored on various cloud services like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and more, as well as edit photos on SSDs, NAS devices, or SD cards.

Switch between Photos and Files browsers by simply clicking the pop-up menu in the toolbar or pressing the X key.

Built Using Native Technologies

The all-new file browser in Photomator is built upon the Apple File System to offer a macOS-native experience.

Thanks to its native capabilities, you can browse and edit photos quickly and easily and import even tens of thousands of photos in moments.

The browser doesn't catalog or store duplicates of your photos and lets you automatically sync edits with the originals, saving storage space.

Effortlessly sync edits through iCloud Drive and collaborate with colleagues, friends, and others on editing photos within shared iCloud folders.

Enjoy familiar macOS-native features, like drag and drop, to effortlessly import photos or entire folders.

Thanks to APFS support, duplicating photos in the file browser does not consume extra storage.

The all-new file browser is optimized for devices with Apple silicon, taking full advantage of its incredible performance.

Photomator uses Metal to harness the full graphics processing power and Core ML to bring the best possible ML processing performance on every Mac.

Quickly AirDrop photos, send them via iMessage or email, and share them with other apps directly from Photomator using the Share pop-up menu.

Easily add photos or entire folders to Photomator by simply selecting Add to Photomator from the Share menu.

Revamped Sidecar Files

A new way for saving sidecar files was built from the ground up specifically for the file browser, allowing a separate file with edits to be stored alongside the original photo.

When editing photos in the Files browser, you can preserve all nondestructive edits without altering the original photos.

If you prefer saving edits directly to the original file instead of creating a separate file with edits, you can also choose to modify the original file when working in the Files browser.

Thanks to sidecar file size optimizations, your edits, including those of RAW photos, will use significantly less storage space when editing in both Files and Photos browsers.

When editing photos on Mac in SSDs, NAS, or SD cards, the same edits are preserved when opening the storage drives on iPhone or iPad.

Photomator files will now be displayed with a PHOTO badge.

When dragging and dropping paired assets such as RAW+JPEG to move them between folders, only the JPEG file would be moved. Fixed.

If you renamed one file that was part of a RAW+JPEG pair while the app was open, the browser would sometimes end up in an inconsistent state after deleting or moving one of those renamed items. Fixed.

When creating new subfolders, either in the Finder or in Photomator, they would not appear if the parent folder initially had no subfolders. Fixed.

Certain sidecar files would occasionally not be identified correctly, leading to issues with opening them, displaying their thumbnails, and more. Fixed.

If a Photomator file was added to a folder in the Finder while the app was running, it would not appear in the files browser until the app was relaunched or the folder was manually refreshed. Fixed.

If you opened an edited image, then opened a neighboring image and used the filmstrip to revert the previously opened image, then changed back to the reverted image, edits that should have been reverted would be reopened. Fixed.

On rare occasions, certain files would have zero values for width and height, and attempting to open them would cause the app to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

Other Improvements and Fixes

RAW+HEIC and RAW+HEIF paired assets will now have corresponding badges in both browser modes.

When batch exporting large amounts of images, some of them would be empty. Fixed.

Some specific HDR images would be opened completely black. Fixed.

Quickly repeatedly switching between browser modes would result in high memory usage and slowness. Fixed.

Fixes

Fixed various instances where the Files browser would allow users to attempt to modify items that were locked or read-only.

When a photo in the Files browser had its original modified, reopening the photo, resetting all edits, then clicking Done would not revert it to the original. Fixed.

In the Photos browser, open photos would not update after being edited in another app. Fixed.

Photomator would display incorrect editing progress when batch editing photos in the Photos browser. Fixed.

Photomator 3.3.9

Photomator 2.3

Released on April 12, 2023

Photomator 2.3 brings incredibly powerful selective adjustments with the ability to make selections of people, backgrounds, and skies automatically using AI, create gradient and brush-based selections, and a whole lot more.

Pixelmator Photo now has a simpler new name — Photomator — and features a refreshed, more modern design.

You can now select and edit specific areas in photos, without affecting the rest of the photo using powerful selective adjustments.

Use the magic of machine learning to automatically select common areas in photos, such as sky, people, and backgrounds, or make selections manually.

Paint over the areas of a photo you want to adjust with a brush. Easily adjust the brush size, softness, and opacity.

Add customizable linear and radial gradient selections to photos to create smooth transitions between edited and unedited areas. Easily change gradient position, size, rotation, and blending using handy on-image controls.

Adjust specific colors or entire color ranges in photos by selecting them using the eyedropper.

Create additional color adjustment layers to experiment with different edits and easily compare them.

Add selective adjustments to photos by tapping the Add button at the top of the color adjustments pane and choosing a selection option.

Quickly switch between different selections by tapping their corresponding icons directly on a photo.

Keep track of all your selections in an all-new Layers browser at the top of the color adjustments pane.

In the Layers browser, turn the selections on or off to hide the applied adjustments without resetting them. This lets you apply multiple different edits to the same area of the photo and compare them.

Combine multiple selections using blend modes to refine the selected areas or create striking artistic effects. In the More menu next to an existing selection, choose Add or Subtract, and choose an option.

Easily change how selections blend by tapping More and choosing Add, Subtract, or Intersect from the Blending Mode menu.

Find options for renaming, duplicating, inverting, moving, or deleting your selections in the More menu next to each selection layer.

Adjust the intensity of color adjustments applied to each selection by dragging the Intensity slider at the bottom of the Layers browser.

Easily toggle selection previews on and off by tapping More at the top of the color adjustments pane and selecting or deselecting Show Mask Overlay.

Photomator 1.1

Released on October 1, 2019

Batch Editing

Create workflows using actions for color adjustments, cropping, straightening, exporting, and even resizing images for a full-featured batch editing experience.

To start batch editing, select multiple photos and tap ‘Batch’ in the toolbar.

Use every machine learning-powered feature in Photomator in your workflows.

Experiment with a range of readymade batch editing workflows and easily create your own.

Turn off Export to batch edit images in place in your Photos library and the Files app.

All-New Workflow

Photomator now automatically saves changes directly to the images you open and saves nondestructive edits to a linked .PHOTO file.

This means you can now manage all your edits in your Photos library without having to import images.

Instead of ‘< Photos’, you’ll now see much more logical Cancel and Done buttons in the Photomator toolbar.

Nondestructive editing also works in the Files app and your changes will be saved automatically to JPEGs, PNGs, and other compatible formats without losing nondestructive edits.

If you’d rather not save any nondestructive changes while still editing images in place, you can switch to destructive editing in the Photomator section of the Settings app.

Switch between editing in your Photos library or the Files app by tapping Show Photos or Show Files in the toolbar

You can now delete photos or revert to the original directly in the Photomator browser.

To delete any linked files while browsing your Photos library, tap Select, select one or multiple photos, and tap Delete Linked File at the bottom of your screen. To delete a linked file while browsing Files, tap and hold a file and tap Delete Linked File.

Added keyboard shortcuts for Cancel (Command-Delete) and Done (Command-S).

Fixes

The Recents album in the Photomator browser should now mirror the contents of your Camera Roll (or All Photos or Recents albums, depending on which one you have).

Various UI fixes for iPadOS 13 issues.

Fixes for memory management and stability issues.

Tapping to open a document multiple times while it was still being opened would sometimes cause the app to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

Autosaving will be faster for all non-Repair tool edits.

Anyone not using iCloud for linked files will be shown a one-time alert about this new feature.

Additional, localized ‘Linked Files’ folders would be created when changing your system language, making previous nondestructive edits inaccessible — these will now be merged into one folder, named in English, which should restore any missing edits.

It will no longer be possible to cancel a batch editing workflow with a swipe gesture while the workflow is in progress.

You can now double-tap sliders in the Levels adjustment to quickly reset them.

The Cancel button will now be turned off after the first tap to prevent it from being tapped multiple times.

When previewing images in the Photos browser: Previews of already edited images will now be loaded and displayed more quickly. The RAW and modified badges will now appear much more smoothly. If you swipe to preview another image while one is being downloaded, the download will be canceled. Photos would occasionally flicker. Fixed.
