Shape (e.g., hexagon) pattern brush?

Hi! I want to create a textured image covered in hexagon overlay pattern. The hexagons need to be of different sizes in different areas.

Rather than place each and every one by hand, I was curious to know if there is a way to get a patterned brush. I belive this is a thing for Photoshop; curious if we can do it with Pixelmator Pro.

That describes making a brush from a shape, and I made the hexagon brush...
