Masks not working as expected

So here is a weird issue I'm having when working with images and using color adjustments with masks.

- I select an area of the image I want to apply a color adjustment layer to
- I have always used the Quick Selection tool to do this
- I then choose "select and Mask" and smart refine then adjust more of it if I have to
- Then it's on to selecting which preset to use or make my own adjustments
- While selecting a preset, I notice that it will affect the whole image to some degree. not just the area that is masked in white
- I've uninstalled the app and reinstalled it There was no newer version. (version 3.5.6)
- I've restarted the laptop and checked for any updates to it (none)
- None of those actions resolved it
- I've recorded this oddity but I can't upload the video here. I converted the video to a gif but that's not uploading as well.

Without being able to see this in action, are there any ideas on what I can do or what the heck is causing this annoying issue?
