How to crop a photo/ image inside another image?

Hi,

I want to crop a image to fit into a certain area on my cover.
If I change the size of that it stretches the content.
If I use any background related command Pixelmator thinks I want to change the cover itself aka the background. No, I just want to crop a imported jpg.
And is there any modifier / keypress to do this easily?
In Canva this is the easiest standard way to do without thinking about it, just click it and crop it. Done.

Till now I only find in the help the use of ShapeSelection (rectangle) -> Invert -> press Backspace to get an image smaller without changing its size.

But that's not useful for me.
