Thank you for these tutorials! They've been very helpful in learning Pixelmator. However, as the videos get a bit more advanced, they become less helpful in understanding the program, even though they may still teach you how to create a particular effect. They would be much more helpful if they took a moment to introduce the features of the program being used that are not covered in previous videos, and to explain the reasoning behind each step in the process.

For example, when it comes to introducing new effects, in this video, we use gaussian blur. It would be great to get just a sentence or two explaining what gaussian blur is, or how it works, or what makes it different from any other blur effect--just as other features like clipping masks were explained.

This tutorial also involves a few steps that clearly work to produce the intended effect (e.g. creating a duplicate of the layer using the star brush) but it's not clear at all to the viewer why the step was necessary, and so the viewer isn't left understanding how those steps could be applied in any other case.

Other on-the-fly actions--like giving the softness or size of a brush a certain setting--could be more helpful if they were quickly elaborated. How did the instructor decide that such-and-such setting should be 10,000%, or some brush should be 16 pixels, or the softness should be 30%, etc?

With information like this included, the videos would be vastly more instructive than they already are.

Thanks for the feedback, Michael!

I totally understand your issue, we're thinking about that a lot when making each tutorial – while we strive to provide enough information to give an understanding of the task, we don't want to make the video too long. We also usually recommend experimenting with different settings until you achieve the desired result but I'll definitely keep your feedback in mind. 💪

Is it possible to create a custom brush using a photo? This is a feature that the Painter application called an Image Nozzle and was very useful.
