can the shadow's color change along with the background color?

I am learning skills to add shadow for project.
but the shadow's color couldn't change along with the background color.

Coming from vector design I´m used to use transparent overlays to generate shadow+highlights - so the base color can be changed on the fly:

Small hint; cast shadows usually start sharp and continue more soften at its end which can be fine tuned with a focus or tilt shift blur:
