Pixelmator stuck on a tool

Hi.
Recently Pixelmatr has become impossible to use: every time I start working on an image, it does one operation then gets stuck on this one tool (marquee, for example, or pen tool, colour selection tool etc).

I tried deleting the prefs but it did nothing.

any ideas?
