You can quickly change the opacity of a layer using the number keys on your keyboard. First, choose the Style tool, then press a number key once to set opacity at 10% intervals, or press any two number keys quickly to set an exact opacity. Pressing the 0 key once sets opacity at 100% and pressing it twice sets opacity at 0%.
