How do you convert px into sizes used in word processors? For example, what point size would a Helvetica showing 38 px be in Word?

Hi Robb.

Word processors generally size their type in points. There are 72 points per inch.

Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro size their text in pixels. When you create a new image you set the resolution of the image in Pixels Per Inch (PPI). Assuming that you will print/display at 100%:

size in pixels = size in points × (PPI/72)

size in points = size in pixels × (72/PPI)

Typically, designs for screen use have been at 72 PPI* and design for print are at 300 PPI.

So at 300 PPI your 38 px font would be 38 × (72/300) = a little over 9 pt
And at 72 PPI a 38 px font would be 38 pt.

If you're in the middle of a drawing and you want to check the resolution of the image, go to Tools > Image Size where you can see and change the resolution of your image. If you have rulers on (⌘R to toggle) you can change the displayed units on the rulers by control-clicking on a ruler.

Hope this helps.

- Stef.

*although now that retina screens are commonplace, it might be more appropriate to design at 144 PPI

We will — apologies for the inconvenience! For now, you can convert text to pixels or shape as a workaround, as for these layer types, you can adjust stroke position.

So no text measurement in points .. is that right ?

Yup - all in px for text. Shape elements allow "mm/cm/in" in entry fields though.

If I select a pre-set, for example Title, I can move the text and change it, if I then chnage the font, it won't let me change the text or move it, can you please explain why?

I can't reproduce this easily, but this sounds like a potential bug. If you have a minute, would you be able to share a screen recording of this issue with us at [email protected]? Also, if you're using any custom fonts, it would be great if you could attach them to the email as well.
