Hi everyone,

I tried exporting .DNG files from Lightroom in order to try and migrate to Photomator, and when I open the folder in Photomator, the preview shows me the photo with the correct edits, but when I double click to open it up in the editor mode, the photo is the original non-edited version.

I was under the impression that Apple/Photomator would handle the .DNG files? If no, my only way to get edited photos from Lightroom would be .JPG ? Because raw+sidecar option is out of the question since Photomator can't make use of Adobes .xmp files?

And a side question - is there any way to move photos from the Files view to Photos? If I edit raw files in the Files mode, I would then like the edited versions to be in the Photos app for easy access across devices.

Thank you!

A dng is a standardized raw file format. It contains no edits. So at first you see the embedded jpeg preview. But when you edit it opens the DNG. The edit do not comme across from lr I think.

Thanks Martin!

Makes sense, I did some more reading on DNG now.

I guess in moving from LR to Photomator my options are to either move un-edited RAW files, or to export max quality JPGs to keep my historical edits?

edits information is stored in .DNG files. Adobe designed the .DNG format to contain them. It's basically combining the raw file and .XMP into one. Apple can see and display the edited image, but Photomator won't be able to make use of the edit info since they use their own standard sidecar. Had they gone with the industry standard .XMP, you might have been able to at least see flag/ratings/etc from the .DNG.

Yes, you'll have to do .JPGs if you want your edited images and start over with the raw file if you want to re-edit.

It would nice if Photomator could use or open DNG / XMP files for better interoperability!

Thanks guys!

Turns out it's painful moving from LR to something else, so it's not Photomators fault. I can't blame Adobe really, who would want to make it easy to move between platforms.

I'm almost done with the migration now, I decided to export raw+sidecar and large edited JPGs separately, it was the only way to get raw files and also my edits with me going forward.

My last question remains though – any way to move from Files to Photos once a photo is edited?
Example: I import 100 RAW images into Photomator using the Files way of working, and once I have 20 edited photos, I'd like to access them on my iPhone easily, so if I could have them available in the Photos way of navigating, that would be sweet.

I have all of my RAW files (18,000) in Photos, including some Fuji Compressed ones. I just imported the lot from the finder, making albums on the way. I did not export them from LR as I wanted the original RAWs. As you'd expect, the Fuji compressed don't show up in Photos, but if you open Photomator and look, you can see them fine (in Photos mode, not files mode). All I did is applied a quick enhance Workflow to all the files (which I can easily go back and edit should I want to) which saves back to the RAW (well, a sidecar really), making it visible in Apple Photos.. Job done. I can now see all my files on the MacBook and iPhone no problem. No need to export DNGs unless you want to retain LR edits.

If you do want to retain the LR edits then why not just export JPEGs into Photos purely for viewing on iphone etc. Seeing as how you can't modify LR edits in Photomator anyway.? There's even a LR plugin that will export to photos and keep your folder hierarchy as albums in Photos.

It seems Photomator may not fully support edited .DNG files from Lightroom, showing the original instead. Exporting as .JPG could be a better option to retain edits. For moving photos, drag them from Files to the Photos app or use the "Import" function to sync across devices. With no time to write my essay, I turned to academized.com/pay-for-essay The writer was experienced, and I received an essay that was well-structured and full of solid arguments. They followed my guidelines closely, and I even got it before the deadline. I highly recommend this service if you need high-quality essays without the stress of writing them yourself.
