Using the Quick Selection tool to select an object toggles on the overlay view, the grid, as if you had entered ⇧⌘h; the grid remains on. ⇧⌘h does toggle it off again and continues to toggle on or off as desired, but the Quick Selection tool should not turn the grid on.
Additionally, I just noted that if you simply double click select a shape with the arrange tool, you cannot see the shape's anchor points without overlay viewed (⇧⌘h); but anchor points are enabled and additional, unseeable, points may be created - only seeable when overlay is turned on.
