lighten/darken limited to circular brush?

I use lighten and darken a lot in image creation, and am used to using any brush available in photoshop, is it possible to use different brushes in pixelmator? and if not why not! heh

This is not yet available the way you describe it in Pixelmator pro. The way to accomplish what you want you will have to duplicate the layer you are working on darken or lighten the whole layer and use a custom brush from the brushes tool on a mask.

thanks for that, unfortunately, I use these tools in a more creative way, building up light and dark, so this method wont work for me. thanks

I'm going to agree with Jon here. In Pixelmator classic I was able to use any brush for the lighten and darken tools, now I have no choice at all. How is that a "pro" upgrade? The solution given here is a multi step solution which I'm finding out is rampant in the "pro" version. I have to do two to three steps to do what I used to do in classic pixelmator with one step. This thread is now six years old and you developers have not addressed this problem.
