I make a circle, a square, whatever.
Then I click the eraser and try to erase just a portion of the line of the shape I made.
But I can't. The eraser won't erase.
So I make the single shape a "group" then I "merge" that group and only then can I erase a part of that shape.
Seems I am missing some understanding here.

Yes you are. The eraser only works on pixel layers, not shapes. Convert to pixels - your merging a "group" with pixels as you did makes everything pixels so you can erase with abandon. Easier to just Format -> Convert to Pixels

Thank you for the answer.
Why does the eraser not work on shapes?

Shapes are vectors. Meaning defined by points and curves.
You can add or subtract another shape to modify it.
These objects are resolution independent when scaled.
