selection and layers

I'm making the switch to Pro from long use of non-pro.

1. Is there a free selection tool that is not anchored? Can you just drag to make a selection without having to close the loop on that teeny tiny little starting point dot?

2. If I select multiple layers in the layers panel and then rotate them, they rotate as individual layers not altogether as one. This is different from non-Pro. How to make them all rotate around a single axis, not each individual layers axis? (without merging the layers of course.)
