Hello, i want to resize the canvas without stretching or shrinking the image.

For an example i have an png file which is 2036x2000 and i want to make it 1200x1200 and fit the image inside. I'm using pixelmator pro.

Can you offer solution for my case?

Hi there! Resizing the canvas without affecting your image size can be done by using Image > Canvas Size.

I tried this one but it doesnt work. The img doesnt fit in the smaller canvas size.

So then you do want the image to be shrunk? In that case, try using Image > Image Size instead.

In this case it`s shrinking my image. I'm not sure if you understand me right. I will try to explain again in more details.

For an example - i have image with resolution 2000x2736 pixels. I want to make it square and with smaller resolution, something like 1200x1200 or 1000x1000 without crop or stretching the image itself. If i make it with Image > Image Size it's getting shrinked. And if i make it with Image > Canvas Size it gets cropped. I hope you will get me right.

It sounds like you're looking to shrink your image but without its proportions being distorted. Try going to Image > Image Size, making sure the Scale Proportionally checkmark is enabled, and then entering the desired value for one of the width / height fields. The other one will then populate automatically with the correct dimension needed to preserve the original proportions of your image.

If this doesn't solve your problem either, could you share some screenshots of your project before and after you try resizing it?

This is the image that I want to make it square. I will be uploaded on a website and it must be square and maximum 1200x1200.

When I try with the canvas size it crops my photo and look like this

When I try to make it 1200x1200 with the image size

Thanks for sharing the screenshots! You can achieve what you're going for by first using the Crop tool to crop your image into a square, and then using Image Size to downscale it to your desired dimensions.

Edit: You could also use Canvas Size instead of the crop tool, e.g. by resizing the canvas to 2000 x 2000 pixels to make it square and then using Image Size from there on.

Can I downscale the image without cropping it?

If you want the resulting image to be a perfect square, that means some sort of a crop operation would have to be performed - whether that's cutting down your canvas, or expanding it, which is also possible through Canvas Size as well as the Crop tool. If you want to preserve all of the content of your image, use Canvas Size to resize the canvas into a large square (e.g. 2736 x 2736). You'll see a checkerboard pattern added on each side of the photo - this indicates transparency. You'll then need to extend the background of your photo to fit the canvas. To do that, create a new layer, use the Color Fill tool to fill it in with white, and drag it below your photo layer in the Layers sidebar.

Thanx for your time. And one more question - is there an option to do this for a whole folder with bunch of photos at once like macros in photoshop?
