It seems the selection boundary isn't always working correctly when using the erase tool. I'd expect area inside the selection not to be erased, but in certain areas it erases quite far past the selection boundary.

I have a screen recording, hopefully it's viewable here:

First, what is the reason for erasing? From the video it appears you are trying to erase the background from inside the cup handle, right?
If you are trying to erase the background - you could just invert the selection and delete the background. Or easier still you could, from the menu, Edit -> Remove Background. It works on your image.

I do need to erase the background, but since this a white mug on a white background I need precise control over the selection to erase. Using Edit > Remove Background causes blurry edges equivalent to using this selection and doing it by hand, so it's not really a solution for me.

In any case this seems like a bug in Pixelmator to me. If there's a better place to report bugs I'd be happy to report it in a bug tracker or whatever.
