Masks are a complete mystery to me. From whether they should be placed above or below an image, moved, how they work (differently sometimes?), what they do (different sometimes?), and the differences between a clipping mask and a mask. Using the simplest examples possible and lots of them, letting us duplicate your examples. Easy enough for a child to understand.

For posterity, there's a dedicated video tutorial on masks, which you can find right here. The best way to get the hang of masks, though, isn't by trying to understand everything about them straight away, but rather by following along with various tutorials and finding different uses for them bit by bit.
