Move Tool Duplicating Layer

Hi, I'm pretty new to Pixelmator although have been using for a few months and very pleased with what I've been able to achieve. Today it's like there's a gremlin at work!
Having used the Poly lasso tool I have selected a shape to copy and paste onto a new canvas - so far, so good. When moving the new layer on the new canvas the Move tool is duplicating the image and I can't seem to get it to stop!
Pretty sure this is a basic rocky error however it's driving me a little nuts - can anyone help?
