How do I make the tools panel vertical instead of horizontal? Thanks

If you go to the menu option View > Customise Tools Pallette... you can drag the edges to make it to be whatever aspect you want.
The tools are in fixed positions, though so you'll have to either:
1. Drag them all to form a vertical bar
or
2. Click the Reset button and get the default vertical bar.
I'm not aware of any way to just flip the tools pallette vertical or horiontal. That doesn't mean to say that there isn't a way, though.
