In Photoshop, you can hold CMD to temporarily turn off auto-select, or vice-versa if auto-select is already turned off.
Holding Shift + CMD alters this for selecting groups of layers.

Ah, good stuff, thanks for the clarification — I think this makes sense and is already kind of how it works in the Shape/vector tools, for example. So I think
But I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the Shift-Command shortcut and I wasn't able to get it to work in PS. Could you maybe expand on how that shortcut should modify the Arrange tool's behavior?

Whoops, I was wrong.
If I select a group in PS and hold CMD, then I can drag anywhere to move the group. No need for shift.
In Pixelmator, if I select a group and hold CMD, I also have to click-and-drag on one of the layers. Otherwise it'll also move a layer outside of the group. This can be tricky if you're working with lots of layers!

Cool cool cool, that functionality is totally clear – thanks for taking the time to record the video, though! I believe Pixelmator Classic once had this feature but there were issues with its reliability so we dropped it in favor of a more consistent experience. But with Pixelmator Pro, we can definitely see if we can bring it back.
