Making only part of the image have a shadow?

I am in the middle of taking this little equestrian dude off a horse and putting him on a rabbit.

I want his legs to have a shadow against the rabbit he is riding but I don't want his upper body to have a shadow against the sky (background).

Is there a way to make only partial shadows?

In a quick hack I´d go this way:
1. make a double of the dude - select him and paint over with a transparent grey and/or Blend-mode "Multiply", "Darken" for instance.
2. Create clipping mask:

I wanted a shadow from this guy’s leg to fall on the rabbit’s body in the same direction as the shadow from the rabbit’s legs.

I cut him out, made a layer of him underneath and darkened, softened the leg and erased the rest of him.
