Pixelmator 3.3.2 Update

Pixelmator 3.3.2 is out, featuring lots of new stuff — Photos app support, Force Touch trackpad support, jaw-dropping Repair Tool enhancements, and much more.

We simply love the new Photos app for Mac. That’s why we are excited to let you know that you can now access your Photos library right from the Photo Browser in Pixelmator. It looks good and works great.

The new Force Touch trackpad support is also here for you to play with. You can now paint with pressure sensitivity using a Force Touch trackpad on the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. The force sensors detect how much pressure you’re applying, and Pixelmator changes the size of your brush. It feels just like painting with a stylus.

Finally, we are very proud of the unique, incredibly powerful Repair Tool in Pixelmator for Mac, which is now up to 5 times faster. Since we’ve spent so much time perfecting the tech behind this tool.

Stunning, isn’t it? If you don’t believe what you just saw (which wouldn’t be much of a surprise), go ahead and update Pixelmator to 3.3.2. Then, download the photo you just saw in the video and try it for yourself. You can download it here.

The Repair Tool is one of our many fun and interesting secret scientific projects. We even used the new Mac Pro (because it’s extremely fast and powerful) to automatically improve our Repair technology algorithms.

Since there are numerous ways to repair any area of an image, our Mac Pro worked incredibly hard for months to find the best algorithm. It analyzed millions of possible ways to repair areas of various complexity, and then it compared the speed and quality ratio of each final result. Lastly, our Mac Pro—this is awesome—derived a repairing strategy that gives the optimal result every single time. How smart is that?

In other words, the new Mac Pro did a great job. And because it did so well, you can now wipe away unwanted objects in Pixelmator for Mac extremely quickly and with superb quality.

Enjoy the new Pixelmator update and please remember that we feel great when you let us know what you think about our work.

We’ll talk to you very soon about some awesome new stuff. Thanks.

I love your app. It’s awesome. I would like to translate it into Czech. Are you interest?

Unfortunately, I cannot see any video. 😉 Best wishes, Jan

Love the update as always! But I have to ask again, when is the non-destructive editing (not just for the repair tool) / effects in layers coming? It’s only the lack of that workflow that makes Pixelmator unable to be my primary photo editing software. While the new features are always cool, they are of much smaller significance to the overall experience than something as fundamental as non-destructive editing. Plus, I seem to remember once upon a time that non-destructive editing was going to be the headline enhancement for 2014…

    Daniel,

Non-destructive editing is something we are working on for a while now. It’s coming. And it’s going to be great.

Any plan to add support for (real) 3rd-party plugins?

I tried your new repair tool.
It’s really fantastic, can partly replace the clone stamp and definitely joined this will save a tremendous amount of time.
Your software is improving faster than any other software on the market.

    My question is:

How do you access the Photos in your Apple Photos library? I am excited for this possibility and hope to be able to do so very soon!

  • Ed

Ok… I found how to access the photos in the photos app… for improvement, what needs to be next is to be able to sort them by album… Just my 2 cents worth.

I need this repair tool on my iPhone for quick image edits when I’m out and about taking photos on my iPhone. Will you guys be releasing an iPhone app any time soon?

Great to be able to open pictures from the Mac Photos App. However, when I make changes, those changes do not get automatically saved to the Photos App? What would be the workflow to get the picture back into Mac Photos App?

  • Steve Broadwater

I have the same question: I can open pictures from the iCloud photos library (the Photos app), but I can’t figure out how to save edited photos back there.

  • Grey

This is exactly the workflow that I am hoping Pixelmator team is going to bring into the Pixelmator application. The fact that Photos for OS X is so limited in what edits can be done in Photos, relegates it to pretty much being an application for managing the photo library and synchronizing the photo library with iCloud. It should be possible for a third-party photo editing application like Pixelmator to open a photo from the Photos library, edit it non-destructively, and save an edited version back to the Photos library.

Is this something that Apple has an API for (Photos Extensions like they announced for Photos for iOS back in 2014)? If there’s no such “extensions” API in OS X, is there any hope that this workflow can be achieved before (if ever) Apple creates such an API? I can see why it may not be possible to open Pixelmator as an editing tool from within the Photos application without such an API. Therefore, being able to open a photo from the Photos library while being in Pixelmator is a decent workaround for this, but can an edit made to such a photo be saved back to the Photos library and if not, is the Pixelmator team working on this?

Nice to see the improvements. Now if we could have the option for:

    – Larger icons
    – Single window mode

Thank you for your consideration of these ideas.

@Simon, @Steve Broadwater, @Grey, to save the edited images back to Photos library simply choose Share > Add to Photos.

  • Simon

@Motiejus: Yes, they can be shared back to Photos, but not in RAW format but only as JPEGs?

I attempted to download your trial version but it says I need OS X 10.10 or later. If I buy the program off the App store is this the same? I don’t want to use Yosemite on my 2011 iMac which has Mavericks OS X 10.9.5

I bought Pixelmator because my Photoshop CS5 would not open my Olympus OM-D E-M10 raw files and Pixelmator does. At $29.95 I did not expect much. The other day I had to remove some text from images and given my limited skills with the trackpad it was going to take me hours with Photoshop. On a whim I tried Pixelmator with the repair tool. It was almost like magic! In minutes I had seamless images with the offending text removed.
Pixelmator has now replaced all the photo editing tools I used to use.
The biggest problem with Pixelmator is that a lot of people, just like I did, will have low expectations because of the low cost!

Pixelmator is amazing software, and I have been using it since day 1. I could never find something I enjoyed using more for graphics on a mac then Pixelmator, I have used photoshop, gimp, seashell. and multiple other types of graphics software. I wish you had a windows version cause lately my macbook has now become a mac desktop (battery exploded inside it and killed the keyboard and the trackpap, I have replaced the keyboard and trackpad, however the battery part is dead and cant be replaced).

I have recently had to move to using a windows machine to do my 3d work cause i paid $999 for a very nice windows machine. 2.4 (turbo 3.5 Ghz) quadcore, 16 gigs of ram, 2 TB harddrive. 2 GB dedicated Nvidia card. For a mac of that much power would have been easily 4k. Now All i need is to find a program thats even close to as amazing as pixelmator. I still use pixelmator on my macbook its just no longer my preferred machine. Keep up the good work on pixelmator, you guys rock and I will continue using it on my mac. I plan on releasing a review on pixelmator soon on my blog.

re: Now you can quickly access your Photos library right from the Photo Browser in Pixelmator.

Hopefully there will be a lot more integration with Photos in future. Right now not much.

During WWDC 2015 Keynote Speech, Apple unveiled Photos Editing Extensions for OS X in El Capitan. This is a long awaited feature that should function similarly to iOS Photos Editing Extensions.

Is Pixelmator planning to bring this feature into the next release of Pixelmator for OS X? I really would like to know because to me this appears to be the only sensible way to maintain my photo library in Photos for OS X (for syncing with iCloud Photos) while being able to edit my photos in Pixelmator.

    Thank you!

Where did Geometry-Perspective in Effects Browser go in version 3.3.2?! I can see Tile-Perspective but there’s still no way to control how many rows/columns the result should have (if it did, “one” could possibly replace Geometry-Perspective). Also, CS-PSD files with smart objects are still not read right. Overall, it’s a good software and an outstanding bang for your buck, but not a tool for those transitioning from Photoshop — at least, not yet, as you have to re-do some work when opening PSD files.

  • PMR

Never mind, I finally find “Perspective” hidden under “Transform” (but it only shows up when you select “Transform” and click on the gear icon). It used to show under Effects Browser, though, and it’s confusing why it was moved to such a hard to find place — maybe something to revisit at a future version. My comments about Pixelmator not reading PSD files correctly remain, regrettably. But then again, Pixelmator is a nice tool and very cost-effective, can’t complain about that.

Please include scaling interpolation selection (Nearest Neighbor, Lanczos and others).
And selecting zoom level by clicking on the zoom indicator and typing it in.
