It looks like you have OS X Tiger. In that case not all filters are supported.

i second these suggestions.
the rulers are a great start but i would also like to see numbers (in an info tab within one of the existing palettes or in a new tool/palette) informing me the origin and size of what's selected.

i would say it's a fair debate as long as you're specific about what Version of photoshop to which you are comparing pixelmator... it's not at all fair to compare pixelmator to cs/cs2/cs3, however, i would say it's entirely fair to compare it to, say, photoshop 5/6/7's core functions. i stuck with photoshop 5 on pc and 7/cs on mac and as a web developer only ever used whatever small set of features allowed me to compose small images (rastered text from fonts not available to most web visitors' computers, buttons, icons, etc.) and/or crop/resize/retouch images for sharing online. so yes, as a photoshop 5 clone (minus imageready of course) pixelmator does VERY WELL

Getting new filters ?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to pixelmator (just bought it earlier today) and I tried some tutorials which sometimes request filters I don't have...

Filters like 'floor' or 'neon' (now everybody guesses what tuto I'm doing ) can't be found, although I downloaded quartz composer (dunno what to do with it by the way) and put it in my applications folder.

I don't even understand how to get new filters.

If someone knows how to help me...

You can create nice looking edges when you use quick mask mode in combination with some of the filters for example.

Same here - I love the new version of Pixelmator!! But the inability to precisely define a selection area prevents me from using Pixelmator as my full-time image editing tool.

I thought about this some more and would be VERY happy if the Pixelmator selection tool behaved like the built in image capture tool of OSX 10.5.2.

To see what I am talking about, just hit Command+Control+Shift+4 in OSX 10.5.2. A selection crosshairs will show up on screen. As you move the crosshairs around the screen you can see your current position measured from the top right corner of the screen. Then, as you start to select an area the display changes to show the dimensions of the area you are now selecting.

Adding this functionality to Pixelmator selection tool would be AWESOME!! However, instead of showing the start location measured from the top right of the screen, Pixelmator would show the start location from the top right corner of the image you are working on. The selection area would then be measured from that start position.

Give it a try in OSX - and please add this to Pixelmator!

Before posting a bug in the Pixelmator forums, check the following.

If the bug didn't happen before, you might want to check if you have installed any new software on your mac, including apple software update. If this is the case, try to repair file permissions using Disk Utility first to see if this solves the problem.

If Pixelmator is acting strange and you notice unexpected behavior with other software too, then it might be time to repair file permissions using Disk Utility.
If you recall your mac crashing, so you had to do a force quit and restart, you might also want to use the Repair Disk option in Disk Utility.

Off course, check if you have the latest version of Pixelmator. Your issue might be solved already in a new Pixelmator release.

If all this doesn't help or isn't relevant for you, then you probably found a bug.
Search the bug forum first to see if your issue isn't posted before. If you find a similar post, we encourage you to post additional information that might be useful for us. We are always interested in your Mac specs to see if the issue is related to a particular Mac.

When your issue isn't posted before please make a new post and include the following information.

The exact steps to reproduce the issue
Your Mac specifications
If you want to post a part of the console/crash-log, please don't paste the whole log in your post. Send the log to our bug e-mail address as an attachment and refer to your post in the forums.

* Note on console-logs. It might be helpful to remember at what time the crash occurred. Open the Console application from the Applications/Utilities folder. Choose to view All Messages and scroll to the date and time a view minutes before the crash happened. Select that post and scroll down to a few minutes after the crash. Hold the shift key to select all the console messages in that timeframe. Save this selection and send it as an attachment to us.

If you can make them better than Photoshops I'll bow in front of you in admiration. Maybe someone in the Pixelmator Team can tell us if we will see layer styles in v.2 or is this a more advanced function? My guess is that it is something not easily done. Unfortunately.

A function for saving workspace layouts would be great. This way it would be possible to have one workspace for "laptop" and one for "external monitor".

This is a problem I also have when working with my extermal monitor and then switching to laptop on the go. The palettes in the lower right corner disappears off screen.

When Pixelmator opens a .psd file, any text layers are rasterised and therefore non-editable.

Sorry there is no easier way around the problem.

Also worth mentioning is that you loose any applied layer effects (like drop shadow) and adjustment layers.

The interface for Pixelmator is beautiful, but can be akward for some users based on their set up.

Perhaps an option in the future to alter is to your liking would be nice, but it'll be difficult to maintain the apps nice looks.

Perhaps try one with the 'pro' interface from high-end Mac apps like FinalCut... that would be interesting! (One for the future still)

I think Pixelmator would be great boxed up and off the shelf. If the aim is to remove all bugs soon, then I'd say thats the point to box 'em up.
