Crop, flip, and rotate photos

In Photomator, you can crop a photo to improve its composition, remove unwanted parts, or use the machine learning-trained ML Crop to make intelligent crop suggestions for you automatically. You can also rotate and flip a photo, apply crop presets, or crop it by entering a custom aspect ratio.

Crop a photo
  1. Choose the Crop tool by doing one of the following:

    • Tap in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    • Press C on your keyboard.
  2. If a different crop mode is selected, tap the crop mode button and choose Crop.

  3. Do any of the following:

  • Crop the photo automatically: Tap ML Crop in the Crop tool options.

  • Crop manually: Drag the crop box handles to define the area you want to keep in the photo.

  • Crop to specific proportions: Tap or press X on your keyboard, then choose the aspect ratio you want or enter a custom crop ratio.

Tip: You can tap in the toolbar to turn on a grid. You can use it to adjust the crop box more precisely.

To reset all your changes tap Reset in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Flip a photo

You can use the Flip tool to flip the photo vertically or horizontally, to redistribute the visual weight of the objects in a photo or improve the composition.

  1. Choose the Crop tool by doing one of the following:

    • Tap in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    • Press C on your keyboard.
  2. If a different crop mode is selected, tap the crop mode button and choose Crop.

  3. Tap at the bottom of the screen to flip your photo horizontally, or to flip it vertically.

Note: To see both Horizontal Flip and Vertical Flip options on iPhone, rotate your device to Portrait orientation.

Rotate a photo
  1. Choose the Crop tool by doing one of the following:

    • Tap in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    • Press C on your keyboard.
  2. If a different crop mode is selected, tap the crop mode button in the bottom-left corner of the screen, and choose Crop.

  3. Tap at the bottom of the screen to rotate the photo clockwise, or to rotate it counterclockwise.

Note: To see both Rotate Right and Rotate Left options on iPhone, rotate your device to Portrait orientation.

Crop photos automatically

When you turn the Crop tool on, you can grab one of the crop box handles and start resizing it yourself or use ML Crop to crop a photo automatically. ML Crop has been trained on millions of photos to recognize good and bad image compositions. Based on this training, ML Crop can analyze and crop photos almost as intuitively as a skilled photographer would.

  1. Choose the Crop tool by doing one of the following:

    • Tap in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    • Press C on your keyboard.
  2. If a different crop mode is selected, tap the crop mode button and choose Crop.

  3. Tap ML Crop at the bottom of the screen.

Use ML Crop with crop presets

You can also use ML Crop in combination with the crop presets. ML Crop will find the best way to apply the specific preset and carefully calculate what to keep and what to leave out of the image.

  1. Choose the Crop tool by doing one of the following:

    • Tap in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    • Press C on your keyboard.
  2. If a different crop mode is selected, tap the crop mode button and choose Crop.

  3. Tap ML Crop at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Tap at the bottom of the screen or press X on your keyboard to choose the crop ratio you want.

Note: For the photos that have already been cropped, ML Crop uses the current aspect ratio as a starting point for cropping.
