Photo album for iOS Pixelmator

After nondestructively modifying a photo in iOS Photos, the changed photo appears with the associated badge. This, I presume, means it's connected to file in my iCloud folder.

If the pictures app still displayed the unedited photo and needed opening pixelmator photo to merge the original with file, I'd have a better understanding of the physics. But it doesn't; instead, it displays the modified image.

What I'd like to know is whether my original file is saved in iCloud Photos or if it is erased and replaced with a lower-quality export...

After that, the original is preserved in the iCloud folders.

If anyone knows how it works, please explain it to me if it's not too much trouble.
