Sneak Peek at Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry

This is something we are extremely excited to show off. It’s a nifty new feature called Convert Text into Shape. Once the text becomes a shape, you can then do all kinds of cool stuff that is simply beyond text formatting. You can easily apply gradients, shadows, strokes, or even, if you want to, reshape individual letters.

And this is just one of many delicious goodies we have lined up for the major update. Stay tuned for more!

P.S. Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry will be a free update via the Mac App Store.

Development Update

It’s been a great year for Pixelmator. We are extremely happy to see how Pixelmator improves with each release and that the Pixelmator community is rapidly growing. Successful releases, such as Pixelmator 2.1 Cherry, only prove that the decisions we are making are the right ones.

And, boy, we made a lot of them during 2012. We’ve changed from the ground how Pixelmator handles colors, we’ve introduced the world’s fastest Healing Tool, updated Pixelmator for Retina displays, and added other cool new features. In fact, we’ve released more Pixelmator updates than ever before, fixing several hundred bugs and making very important improvements. The number is astonishing when you think that all of it was done by our small Pixelmator Team.

All of those constant maintenance updates aim for more than just to make Pixelmator more reliable and stable, and awesome. We’ve carefully crafted and laid a foundation for a couple of new features that we will introduce next year. And, you know, we just can’t keep it a secret any longer, so here it goes.

We are super excited to announce that, in 2013, layer styles are coming to your favourite image editing app! But wait, there’s more. Just before introducing layer styles, we have one more treat for you on the way—Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry. Here’s a hint:

That’s all from us for now. Talk with you next year.

The Pixelmator Team wishes you all warm and cozy holidays!

Setback

Everything we do at Pixelmator Team is aimed at making your favorite app the best in the world. With every minor update, we strive to live up to a high-quality standard. We even put aside new features, such as layer styles, for the sake of quality improvements. So far, we are happy with what we’ve achieved. However, there is one issue we wanted to talk about a little bit more.

A month or so ago, after the most recent OS X update (10.8.2), we’ve bumped into a problem that causes certain Macs to restart when intensively using Pixelmator. Sometimes, the app would stop responding without restarting a computer, or just cause some graphical glitches.

We did everything to find the root cause of the problem. We’ve researched a vast amount of information about OS X internals. We’ve torn down our Macs. We even reached out to Apple. Finally, the picture was clear: It’s an issue with NVIDIA GeForce graphics card drivers.*

Although the issue isn’t with Pixelmator, we didn’t give up. We’ve searched for various workarounds, and then, we checked with you to see if any of them helped (thanks so much for being so patient and for taking the time to test those workarounds). But in the end, nothing worked.

Good thing, though—the guys at Apple are very helpful, and as soon as we hear about a solution, we’ll let you know about it that very moment.

To prove our commitment to you and to brighten up the holiday spirit, we are soon to release a Pixelmator 2.1.4 update that comes with tons of quality improvements.

* The following Macs with NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards are currently affected: GT 120, GT 320M, GT 330M, 9400M, and GT 9600.

Color Perfect Pixelmator 2.1.3

This update adds entirely new color management: Soft Proofing, ColorSync, full sRGB support, and more.

We are excited to announce the Pixelmator 2.1.3 update. It has completely redesigned color management and a ton of great new features that will help you keep all your image colors in perfect shape.

In the digital world, colors can be defined in many ways, and when it comes to precision, a feature called Soft Proofing comes in handy. Soft Proofing lets you quickly apply different color profiles to your images so you can get an idea of how the outcome, such as the printed image, might look. That’s right, CMYK lovers, now you can preview and work in CMYK colors.

On top of that, thanks to the sRGB standard, the image colors inside Pixelmator will also look better. The sRGB color standard is widely used on most devices you come across every day, such as digital cameras, scanners, or even your iPhone. This means that the colors of images you edit in Pixelmator will look absolutely perfect outside Pixelmator and across all of your Apple devices.

Here are some more highlights for this update:

  • New Color Management look
  • Enhanced PSD file format support
  • Improved Automator actions
  • Ability to reset gradient presets or brush collections quickly
  • Spanish and Italian languages added

All-New Healing Tool in Pixelmator 2.1.1

The Pixelmator 2.1.1 update is out! But this is more than just another maintenance update. We’ve packed in a little treat for you: This update brings a radically improved Healing Tool. Now you can easily remove image imperfections or just about any image element you want, so your pictures look their absolute best.

Pixelmator Healing Tool Performance
Up to 20x faster than previous version

We are bursting with pride to tell you that this is the best and the fastest Healing Tool in the world. Pretty sophisticated algorithms and the latest OS X technologies have allowed us to create a tool that performs at an incredible speed. We hope you’ll be as excited about it as we are.

A lot of other good things are here, too: the ability to temporarily hide the Alignment Guides with the Command key, significant performance improvements, the effects you’ve missed, and much more.

Enjoy!
