Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone Is Now Available on the Mac App Store

Powerful Image Editing App Adds All-new Repair Tool, 16-bits per channel Support, and Lock Layers Feature

Today, the Pixelmator Team announced Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone, an amazing update to its fast, innovative, and powerful image editing app, featuring an all-new Repair Tool, 16-bits per channel support, and Lock Layers feature. Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone is available today as a free update on the Mac App Store.

“Packed with incredible features, Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone delivers the most empowering image editing experience Pixelmator fans have ever had,” said Saulius Dailide of the Pixelmator Team. “Redeveloped from the ground up Repair Tool, 16-bits per channel support and Lock Layers feature make Pixelmator an excellent image editor that is just as fun and easy-to-use as it is powerful.”

Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone

Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone features an all-new Repair Tool. Redeveloped from the inside-out, the new Repair Tool is built on breakthrough technologies that enable removing unwanted objects or image imperfections with an unsurpassed level of quality and precision. It now has three options: Quick, Standard, and Advanced repairs. These options are the combinations of sophisticated repairing algorithms aimed at achieving the best results when removing small or large objects from smooth and complicated backgrounds—all while using four times less memory than its predecessor.

Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone brings 16-bits per channel support to the Mac. With 16-bits per channel support, you have more color data to work with and greatly reduce the risk of color banding. This means that you can make advanced color adjustments to an image while keeping its color rich and vibrant.

Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone makes it even easier to work with large and complex compositions by bringing the new and long-anticipated Lock Layers feature. Now you can simply lock certain layers to protect their content from any further changes so that you can freely edit the rest of your composition.

Pixelmator 3.2 Sandstone also includes a new Convert Selection into Shape option that lets you quickly and easily create all kinds of shapes from any selection, a number of improvements, user interface enhancements, and fixes related to stability and reliability.

You make my day every time a major update is released. Can’t wait to try it out! =)

I have 3.1 installed but the App Store says I can’t download the 3.2 update because it requires OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 or later and I am still on Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5. Is this a change to requirements in this release? Is Mavericks required from now onwards?

  • Ausra

@Stuart, yes Pixelmator 3.2 requires OS X Mavericks.

Great job on the new healing tool, it’s better than Photoshop’s! And 16 bit color, that’s a real treat as well.
But I can’t seem to figure out how ‘convert to shape’ works, it’s greyed out no matter what I try to do.

  • Ben

I’m with Coen – can’t figure out the Convert Selection to Shape feature.

  • StudioDorgs

Thanks so much for this awesome update! –I second Coen’s question about how to use “convert to shape” though. Searched Help and this site and can’t find any info about this new feature.

  • Ausra

@Coen and Ben, Control-click the actual selection to choose Convert Selection into Shape from the shortcut menu.

  • Coen

I figured it out. It doesn’t work when clicking the wheel in the layers palette, look like a small bug, I’ll post it in the bugs selection. But here comes the good stuff: if you ctrl-click on a selection on the canvas, you can choose the function and it will convert your selection into a shape. It’s simple and it works!

Looks good – now please give us the option for an application frame. Once you offer the option of an application frame I will become a customer!

Unfortunately, not everyone’s desktop is as clean as yours. Here is what most of my clients desktops look like.

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hqazw8gnao2bvc3/AABwzvrwHPBKrzuuc1vhcUola

That is why an Application frame is necessary.

(How they work with a desktop like that I will never know.)

Thanks for the tip about converting selection to shapes! At first it seemed it would only do so using the marquis or lasso tools and not something made with a brush tool. But I drew something with a rough brush, then used the lasso tool to add a little something and was able to convert the entire brushed image into a shape as well, –seriously cool!

    @Photo Enthusiast
Maybe it’s a good incentive to start working with folders and clean up your desktop. It’s not that hard to select everything and move it to a folder on the desktop.

I love the new version – the healing tool is amazing!

What happened to the tool bar though? It seems like lost half my tools – is this the new default tool bar? And is the only way to get it back to how it was by dragging in the tools one at a time?

  • Ausra

@Chris, you might have entered the Vectormator mode. Press Command-Shift-V keyboard shortcut to go back.

That fixed it! Thanks for the speedy response!

Fortunately, that is not my desktop. Several of my clients desktops do look like this. This is quite common in the Windows world. Even though they swtched to Mac you can’t get them to change every old habit.

An application frame helps them to focus on the task at hand. I have a lot of clients who would love to get away from Adobe, however, without an optional application frame Pixelmator will not be their choice.

Is Mavericks fixed now? I’ve heard so many people have had problems with it as an upgrade and have gone back to their previous system, so I’ve stayed away from it.

Wow. The new Repair Tool is very impressive! Good works.
    Many thanx.

    WOW !

Now honestly all I need is an Application Frame as mentioned by Photo Enthusiast + an option to lighten the interface.

The only thing Pixelmator needs is a cleaner UI with less blacks. Everything else is there already, so maybe they will design an unique UI just for Pixelmator.

I have to bring this up again that even with the layer selected and using Control-Click I cannot receive the option to convert into a shape. Is there documentation? I feel like I’m just doing one thing wrong?

  • Jake Jones

Everything i wanted. Top job guys. Cheers.

  • Ausra

@PXM_3201: it only converts a selection into shape, so you have to make selection, then Control-click it.

For an application to enter into the realm of being an abstract layer management system, where it does not belong and should only be leveraging the file system paradigm of the Operating System being used, I have to wonder if you truly should be using software, at all.

Learn how the basic UNIX file system for OS X works. You don’t have to learn Bourne, Csh, Ksh, Zsh, Perl, Applescript or what have you, but learn how the system is layed out.

Using your Desktop to house your files expecting an abstract tool to manage your files on top of a file system is moronic.

Create a damn work flow, a system upon which everyone knows which folder should contain which files, for which clients, etc., and work.

Expecting a Graphics application to waste time on this, instead of adding functionality useful to working on the files at hand, is truly sad.

For example, perhaps I should ask Pixelmator devs to build an Non-linear editing mode for me so I don’t have to work in Blender as much? Or build in a 3D-space modeler because I’m too damn lazy to swap out to Maya/Blender, etc.

The app is to improve in areas on which it is meant to target, not in areas in which the user is mentally challenged to learn.

@Ausra : When is Pixelmator aiming to overhaul the general interface ?
(i.e. remove the black, make a single window-app, dockable palettes, etc. ?)

  • Ron Reed

The new Repair tool is superior to anything Photoshop can offer, it is very impressive! Now comes the obligatory mention of what the program still lacks – I would love to be able to use this software for print projects as well.

Just updated Pixelmator to 3.2 and now it refuses to stay open. I open a file, and as soon as I click on a layer in that file it quits. Tried this with a few different files. At first I thought it was just that file, but it’s also every variation I have of that file as well. Is there some way to stop this from happening? I really need to finish my work on this file ASAP 🙁

To everyone who is complaining about “single window app” or “application-frames”, just hit the full screen button in upper right-hand corner.

@ Those who want a new UI

If I were the Pixelmator guys, I would wait for OS 10.10 to be unveiled before starting any work on the UI, because according to rumors, OS 10.10 UI will be refreshed.
Starting redesigning the Pixelmator UI before that would be a complete waste of time, as a new OS UI implies new UI standards for apps.

Wow, another exciting update so soon after the last update! Pixelmator continues to inch toward becoming a professional tool at a remarkable pace. Here’s hoping for adjustment layers and a modern UI!!

Keep up the good work Pixelmator Team. <3

  • PsykX

@Mateo : Good point. It should have been re-designed from the ground up with Pixelmator 3. Now it’s too late, OS X 10.10 is reported to include GUI changes, and looking back I do agree that the Pixelmator Team should wait until the WWDC next week until they start working on a new UI.

However, a redesigned UI is much needed ASAP. I, for one, am not able to keep this app opened for more than 10-15 minutes. Too much black. Too many floating windows, causing too much clutter. My eyes are soaring when looking at this interface. It doesn’t do justice to the quality of the app *at all*.

thanks for the great update. It is already a perfect product, but if it can be used on a single window mode, it will be even better.

**Don’t force us upgrading OS, Please**

    I am a graphic/motion designer/front-end developer.

Pixelmator is one my favourite graphic tool.
But I am very disappointed that version 3.2 only support OSX 10.9 Mavericks now.

Most of my clients – professional studios and startups – still use old version of OSX for stability – top priority.
I used to be an early adopter, Apple development beta tester, but since I have started my own company I realised how it is hard to upgrade OS every 1~2 years.

OSX Mavericks is still very unstable, causing many troubles with Graphics (mostly with Retina MBPs).
I have downgraded to OSX 10.8 last week and it performance is way better.

I do not ask for 10.8 support at this point because 10.10 will be announced next month.
Please do not force us to upgrade our OS, it’s not just installing new app. It’s changing workflow.

    LOVE this;

I agree with the request of the application dock / frame for the tools, palettes etc…

also .. my big request: an iPad app like draw has.. now then I would be in heaven.

So, I just got this software – have to say that it is nothing less that AWESOME!
I used it for the first time, by checking some of the neat features out on a random old picture, then I moved on to creating this – http://imgur.com/VUtRgVm – which took me only about 20 mins… + the time it took me to find the pictues used…

This is not intended to advertise for me or the picture hence the name and anonymous post…
I do NOT own any of the pictures used in the picture.

Pictures was made only with Pixelmator, by using the blending option for the layers, and a few other brushes and tweaks.

Great update – I just have a small suggestion to make – I think there Convert Selection to Shape utility could be a lot easier to find.

1 – In the top menubar under Layer, ‘Convert Selection to Shape’ would be a real win

2 – Since you’re able to create a selection by Cmd-Clicking on a layer in the Layers window, right-clicking on a pixels layer should should the utility there too. This would be consistent with right clicking a text layer and having the Convert to Shape option present.

Let me know if none of that makes sense – Happy to screenshot whereabouts I mean.

I am just a beginner and on Trial Ver. 3.2. I tried the tutorials and Help but am having problems getting the hang of it. I downloaded PDF Manual for Ver 1.4.1 and it is good for me but there are many changes in Ver 3.2. Is there another PDF Manual online for a later version? When could one expect an Online Manual for Ver. 3.2. Thanks for any help.

You really make it appear really easy together with your presentation however I to find this matter to be actually something which I

I use a bamboo wacom talbet in photoshop, but I question whether there is a better program to use because my handwriting still doesn’t look like “handwriting”. There is no pressure sensitivity so all my strokes and lines are the same width (unlike your 1st and 3rd images). So it looks too perfect, if you know what I mean? I need to work more on trying to figure this out. It’s driving me crazy 😛
