The New Paint Selection Tool in Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry

In Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry, we have one more treat packed for you: The new Paint Selection Tool. It’s an awesome tool that makes selecting anything within your images really simple and enjoyable. You paint as if using the Brush Tool, only you are not painting but rather selecting.

Technically speaking, we’ve implemented a few tricks that enabled the tool to “read” the area within the stroke and then, judging by the texture and colors of it, select entire objects for you automatically. We’ve spent quite some time crafting it, but we believe the tool was really worth it.

The all-new Paint Selection Tool is part of the awesome, free, and soon-to-be-released Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry major update.

P.S. Also, check out cool new Light Leak effect and Convert Text into Shape features coming in Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry!

    great… and release date is *** ?

Okay, I am super excited about this! Thanks. 🙂

This is a great addition, thank you. Hopefully it will select “right into the corners” of a shape unlike the magic wand tool, I look forward to trying it. It would be soooo useful to be able to make a selection from a path too, that would make Pixelmator’s selection capabilities complete, any chance of this in this update?

    You have been warned. ^_^

I am so excited about this update, i just hope the update comes soon, and you have left some awesome surprises in the App for us to find.

Nice, but there is a way to make a selection using de pen tool like photoshop?

  • Ivan

A simple tool, but really useful.
the wait has been long… but I think that it will be well worth it, no one will be disappointed

PS; For me, it is almost impossible to see the video from this site, that attached link on vimeo https://vimeo.com/62876012

    SPANISH:

Por favor, permitan que pueda ser instalado Pixelmator en Inglés aunque el sistema Mac Os sea en español. Ok?
    Pixelmator es padrísimo!!

Posting infos about great new features doesn’t make the waiting for the update easier -___-

Any approximate date for the release available? 😀

  • Shawn

Will you be keeping support for OS X 10.6.8?

    Wow!! So Great!!
    Ohh I can’t wait
I KILL Adobe Ps with Pixelmator 2.2 Install :))

That’s pushing the envelope! Creating tools that doesn’t exist in Photoshop is way more better than trying to mimic them.

  • PsykX

@Albert King : Actually, the Pixelmator Team has been pretty solid at trying to add their little touch to their implementation of Photoshop tools into Pixelmator, only making them better.

The only reproach that I have at this point is all about the general UI of Pixelmator (that is, because I’ve seen some signs about Layer Styles coming in 2.2 – which means I won’t bother with this anymore).

Photoshop’s interface is so much friendlier :
    – Single window interface
    – Dock-able interface elements
    – Collapsible interface elements
    – Interface presets
    – Customizable interface color

Hello, I would also love a vague date for the release. Doesn’t have to be accurate, just something more or less in the ballpark. We understand shit happens and deadlines get moved, but it adds to frustration when it’s sounding like it’s always just around the corner, but never actually out.

Suggested examples: We hope to have the product out by within a few days / mid year / end of the year / by early 2014.

I’m currently using the gimp for features that pixelmator doesn’t have, and the only more frustrating than the gimp is the pixelmator blogs about 2.2 release. Add a smiley there, because I think you provide a great product for the price, but give us a date and you’ll have at least one less frustrated customer.

Just a reminder: The PM blog has stated that layer styles is not a feature planned for 2.2.

    when is the release date????
    i cant wait 😉

This just in. Pixelmator announces the release date of Blueberry 2.2 to be no later then 2015.

  • Rob

The way I read that post is that layer styles are coming in 2013, but before that happens they have “one more treat” which is version 2.2.

  • Mr Smith

This looks super cool but I have to say I’ve always found the selecting in Pixelmator to be much better (i.e. easier, more intuitive, more intelligent) than Photoshop (CS5 – not used CS6 TBF).

  • Julie Maxwell

@hamsta ha! Too funny. I think we all felt that way with the last BIG release

  • Fede

    @ Rob:

The treat may have been the preview of the text to shape feature 🙂 At least I would understand it so.
    Let’s wait and see 😛

  • WebTread

@Fede: You are simply reading into that post what you want to see. It is clear that Layer Styles will arrive in 2013 and has been requested by many for sure but it also clearly states that the treat prior to LS is going to be v2.2 and my guess would be summer earliest for Layer Styles. I wouldn’t hold my breath for it being in this release or we will be calling you Blueberry lol. JK.

@hamsta: I think you nailed it… Def before 2015 lol.

I am excited for this release. New selection tool looks great but the Text thing is huge for me. Can hardly wait.

So once again let’s all take a guess at the actual release date we expect v2.2 to hit the Mac App Store. I’m going to say April 23rd. What’s your best guess for it? I bet it is already being reviewed by Apple but maybe now it’s me just hoping that’s true. My new (refurbished) 27 inch iMac arrives tomorrow to replace my mid 2011 one and it would be awesome if Blueberry comes out right afterwards. Here’s to hoping 😀

  • Fede

@WebTread: Possibly I understand different things because I’m not a native English speaker, so if you say that you understand something else, I believe it (but a little bit of hope remains that the PM team announced LS because they already finished to develop it 😛 ).

Would be cool if someone of them could make it a bit clearer for the believers and non-believers among us. 😀

  • Pixelmator Team

Hey guys! Blueberry is all about shapes. Layer styles will be coming with later update. This year! 🙂

  • Fede M.

    Thanks! 🙂

We are all looking forward to it! Will Layer Styles come in Pixelmator 2 though?

  • hamsta

Did Pixelmator Team udder the words “Layer styles”? I think I hear a herd of cows thundering this way! *shudders*

  • yoz-y

I sincerely hope that shapes will get boolean operations between separate shape-layers and alignment/distribute functions. In their current state they are a decorative feature at best. With some work, however, Pixelmator could become a powerful image editor good enough for vector-based work.

Great complex features such as text-to-shape are useless when basic functions are missing.

How is this different from Quick Mask selections?

@Tyler, not everyone knows how to use Quick mask selections 🙂

  • Pat

Ridiculous. Wasn’t layer styles one of the advertised features for 2.2? I have been waiting patiently since 4 months. Infact I bought Pixelmator in December/Jan in anticipation of Layer Styles. I am disappointed guys.

  • TomS

@Pat, from blog post back in December:

“We are super excited to announce that, in 2013, layer styles are coming to your favourite image editing app! But wait, there’s more. Just before introducing layer styles, we have one more treat for you on the way—Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry.”

  • JazzyJ

Hey just out of curiosity, did Apple take over the project development for Blueberry? I’m asking because no one has heard anything about it for a while now, not that I want it tomorrow but it would be nice to hear how the project is going, especially seeing how people are posting on the blogs and receiving no responses.

  • Fede M.

@ JazzyJ: I guess the small PM team is very busy with working on the app update, so first they won’t be able to say when it will be available nor to respond at all 😛
Let’s just be patient, also regarding layer styles.

Yes, this looks very neat! Can wait for it, when will it be released? Thanks!

  • Walt Ribeiro

How is this any different than the Wand tool? Currently, I can select a portion of the image and add an effect to it in the same exact way.

  • Fede M.

I think the new tool is smarter and can distinguish different objects, while the wand tool selects by color and a certain tolerance range.

I hope you guys know what you are doing waiting so long to release this version. Acorn 4 is getting featured on the Apple App Store currently. I hope this doesn’t mean we have to wait another month so people forget about that whole Acron 4 thing.

  • hamsta

I keep pressing refresh but Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry never appears. I think my browser is broken. 🙁

  • WebTread

    @Pixelmator Team

I know you guys are hard at work and I’m sure we’re almost there but any chance you guys can post to the blog or a message here. Been a month and we know you will deliver it only when it’s ready but doesn’t hurt to drop us a line to keep us informed. Just a thought as many of us check the blog daily. Every time I see a new app update is available I always hope it’s this one. Just wondering if you hit a snag and we need to reset our expectations. Natives getting restless now lol

Thanks in advance for any word…

  • Michael

I’d wish Pixelmator team put more efforts into testing and fixing bugs. Almost every day I’m discovering the new ways in which Pixelmator is broken.

  • Andrew Peterson

I’m as excited as anybody to see Blueberry come out, and I’m really looking forward to layer styles functionality, but I worry that the Pixelmator coders, if they try to please too many of us, will just end up creating another bloated version of Photoshop.

  • WebTread

@Andrew: I’m certain you have nothing to fear there. They are a small team and seem to only implement things they see as having long term value. They are using Apple’s core technologies so a lot of the work is baked in to the OS and they leverage these things. Being a small team also prohibits becoming bloated like PS.

  • Ryan

The Pixelmator team have been doing all the right moves. I’m really excited with the new developments like this and layer styles! With Adobe’s nonsense creative cloud subscription scheme going on full swing at least I have a viable alternative to photoshop! Thanks a million guys!

I’m super excited about version 2.2 (this will probably be the version that pushes me over the edge and makes me buy Pixelmator). However, I’d like to try it out first. Right now, the trial version you supply is still 2.1. When will you update it?
