Five Years of Pixelmator
Happy birthday, Pixelmator! Today, it’s been five years since the first Pixelmator version was released. Yay!
And you know what? We were so focused on the future, planning releases of our beloved image editing app, that we hardly noticed the time passing by.
Today let’s look back and see all those small steps that made Pixelmator what it is now.
Pixelmator 1.0
Pixelmator was born on the September 25, 2007. It was a beginning of something very special for us.
Pixelmator 1.1 Kitten
Around 100 new effects made Pixelmator a real effects machine. You loved it!
Pixelmator 1.2 Draftsman
Rulers, Grid, Snapping, color adjustment tools, and more. Can you imagine Pixelmator without these features now?
Pixelmator 1.3 Tempo
The codename speaks for itself: Major performance improvements, easy to use click-and-drag tools, and more.
Pixelmator 1.4 Sprinkle
All about brushes, with the new brush engine and many more details enhanced. It was an incredible update.
Pixelmator 1.5 Spider
Save for Web feature, Slice Tool, and many more features and tools. Brilliant update for web developers.
Pixelmator 1.6 Nucleus
Performance improvements, 64-bit support, layer groups and more. Boy, this update made Pixelmator really fast!
Pixelmator 2.0 Chameleon
New look and feel, shapes, retouch tools and many more enhancements truly made it the best image editing app.
Pixelmator 2.1 Cherry
Retina display support, iCloud support, the Effects Browser, and more. It was our best release ever!
It’s absolutely amazing to see how much has changed in just five years: so many features, tools, improvements. I would like to say a special thanks to each and every one of you without whom Pixelmator couldn’t have happened. Thanks to you we can continue to do what we love. And because we love it so much, I can assure you, there are many great things to come.
Stay tuned!

“It was the best our release ever!” — you should fix this.

congrats. i bought pixelmator v1.0 the week it came out, and it’s better now than ever. GREAT work, you guys!
Congratulations!
I really enjoy Pixelmator!!
A big thanks for keeping the App lightweight and swift. Great Work!
i’ll ditto Rakesh Ravindran’s thanks for keeping pixelmator LIGHTWEIGHT and SWIFT. a very good point. this is the #1 reason i choose it over adobe’s bloated, fat, slow photoshop app. (#2 reason: price). THANKS AGAIN!
Congratulations! I’m looking forward to the upcoming versions.
Congratulations! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for this great piece of software :-)
What a wonderful application. The little things that show that you all care about what you do, and case about how users interact with the program shine. Your program helos to create, rather than fiddle getting things right. Thank you for making me the photo guru for my family and circle of friends :-) Happy Anniversary!
Congratulations, Pixelmator is the only design/photo/etc app that I use, understand and love!
Congrats. Wishes for a long, prosperus fututre. I use Pixelmator for most of my work.
I like its quality and speed and that it’s getting better and better with every version.
Keep up the good work guys.
Congratulations !!!
and…HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
Happy birthday team. Well done – such a lovely desktop app. Much love atcha.
A program that just only make fun to work with it. Fast, intuitive, brilliant. Keep it up! Pixelmator rocks. Thank you for your hard work. :-)
Best software ever!! Happy birthday my beloved Pixelmator!
I love Pixelmator. It makes me sad that I have to use a PC for work. If you guys ever came out with it for Windows or linux I’d gladly pay quadruple the usual price.
Pixelmator puts other photo editing software applications to shame considering the features and price point!
I agree it is a great application. I still wish you would make it easier for tired eyes to read. The tiny gray letters/graphics on a black background are very difficult for me to see. This is not the first time I’ve made this comment. I’ve seen the posts of others who have also encouraged you to modify this aspect of the GUI.
It’s amazing! Thank you for your great job! Don’t let you drag down by some negative comments! It’s just rocking.
PS: improve .psd support :-D …. just kidding … (ok, no really, improve it ;-)…)
Happy birthday Pixelmator, and thank you so much for this wonderful software! You guys are really doing great!
Congrats! Pixelmator is one of the tools when I decide to use OS X instead of Linux.
But please please add in Pixelmator a light theme to choose between them and the default dark/black theme. I can’t work to long with this dark theme :-(
Congrats! Please bring back the TAB-key for hiding all palettes. (Or any other Shortcut.)
Makes me nostalgic from the interface in 1.0. It was so much easier on the eyes.
does anyone here know how to create a coverflow like the galerie above for a website (html, javascript,…)
It’s good to take a look back to 1.x versions when I believed this software would replace Ps. I really miss the easier interface and specially the color picker for foreground and background colors always visible.
Uh, so much times. I remember when I bought my copy of 1.0 and my little help to debug some functionality.
Every day of work (or fun) on my Macs with Pixelmator is a nice day.
Thank you Pixelmator Team!
