Spider Gallery
I am sure many of you can’t wait for Pixelmator 1.5 to be released. We had planned to ship the wonderful update today but couldn’t do it due to a few small issues. As always, we want the release, the app, and everything that has to do with it to be perfect.
Anyway, the good news is that Spider will be released on Tuesday, September 8th, and because I don’t want you to be depressed until Spider is available, here are some 1.5 screenshots for you:
Talk to you on Tuesday. Cheers.
Ticci
Oh, I was hoping to test it today. Anyway, can’t wait. Trim option seems great!
Swongle
This is very exciting and I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. The trim feature and save for web are both cool. I keep my fingers crossed for:
* aspect ratio selection/cropping
* image mode (and palette) support Γ‘ la PS (color reduction into a x-color palette would be awesome)
* INFO WINDOW!!! (working with selections and cropping right now is a nightmare)
Jace
Awesome! Save for web FTW! You just made my day. Tuesday can’t come soon enough. I’m no longer looking forward to the weekend!
Holger
Is there a possibility to use PNG8 or PNG24/32 or will it always be PNG24/32? The screenshot just says PNG.
Saulius Dailide (Pixelmator Team)
Holger,
PNG Indexed (or 8-bit) is available as well as 24 bit PNG.
Saulius Dailide (Pixelmator Team)
Swongle,
Info window as such is not available. Instead Info labels are available that show useful info depending on the tool in use. You’ll see – it looks and works great.
Swongle
@Saulius
Sounds awesome! Could you confirm image mode switching support and aspect ratio selection/cropping as well? The excitement is killing me π
tai
It seems Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year. Can’t wait!
Heiko Behrens
Trimming looks great and save for web will be helpful, too. Have to agree to Swongle: Info window for tools is highly appreciated.
Saulius Dailide (Pixelmator Team)
Oh, by the way, check how the Slice tool works: https://pixelmator-video.s3.amazonaws.com/slice-tool.mov
Note the drag and drop feature π
Tomas Jakobs
Wow just saw your Slices Video Tutorial… great job!!! Showing coordinates while drawing/resizing the slice is genius… cant wait for 1.5…
lardlad
Drag and drop of the slice thumbnail rocks. I usually have the images folder open in the finder, this helps a lot for adjusting things. No save dialogs. Better yet, drag to CODA file browser. I wonder if that would work?
I wonder what else is coming.
You guys do awesome work. This has got to get Adobe concerned. Just don’t ever sell out!
Jakub Pawlowicz
You’ve made my day π Waiting eagerly to see and start using 1.5 on Tuesday!
Frank Eves
Recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and decided to trim my apps. Adobe Design Suite Premium was trimmed. I’m really enjoying Pixelmator. Thank you, I appreciate your hard work.
wimpus
Thx 4 the screenshots and good luck with the development π
Tom
Don’t suppose this update has any Snow Leopard 64-bit upgrades? Not that it needs a speed boost, it’ll just be extra cool. Keep up the great work guys!
Joe
Will png-8 include support for transparency? Will png have ultra-compression options, more than PS?
Adam
Is that Waffle Software’s hexpicker, or your own version embedded in Pixelmator?
Aron
I really hope you will be able to scroll through your brushes! Download heaps of brushes and installing them is very difficult because the brushes pallet just goes off screen and you can use them!
*Fingers Crossed from scrollable brushes pallet!!!*
Keil Miller
Thanks! Trim feature was much needed, as well as the save for web. That’s two items off my list. Only a few left to go- layer styles, layer folders, a selection tool for rounded rectangles. Adding a gradient instead of using current colors is a pain too. But keep up the good work and make it a replacement for the clunky PS!
Formulk
looks great π good job!
Fabian
Fantastic ! Thanks for the update !
NameCat.com
Pixelmator is looking better and more mature all the time. Great work — keep it up! You’ll be in a good position if you can compete with Adobe Fireworks or other web graphics production tools.
Andrew
Is there a pen tool in this version? Need a pen tool.
Waco Chili
Save for Web = Save my Life! Contrary to some of the crybabies here asking for more, more, more, I think Pixelmator is coming along nicely! Adobe is BLOATED b/c of more, more, more!!!!!! Wait for complete 64bit compatibility before packing in more, more, more! I like my graphics programs lean, lean, lean! Can’t wait for Tuesday!
thoiz_vd
Hmm, on one hand I’m happy with your high quality standard, but on the other hand it’s disappointing to see the release getting postponed over and over again. There is a moment when it’s just not practical anymore to keep on testing yourself. The many, many users waiting for this release would have usable software anyway. As long as the remaining bugs are non-critical – which I sincerely hope them to be – they can all be reported by the users and fixed in a 1.5.1. All together, 1.5-non-polished + 1.5.1-polished could’ve been ready sooner than just 1.5-polished like now.
Now you’re still at it, please update the grammatical error in a dialog presented here.
“Create a PNG image that can be viewed and edited with image editing application, or viewed in a web browser.” It’s ‘viewed and edited with image editing software’ or ‘viewed and edited with an image editing application’. Nevertheless I don’t understand why you chose for this type of explanation. It applies to any kind of image. Shouldn’t such an explanation focus on the specific image format, and tell about its very own features, advantages and disadvantages rather than about it being an image in general?
Christian
@Saulius
Width/Height is good for slicing. Why there are still no cursor position (x/y) coordinates available? I know I can have a ruler, but I need to know exactly, especially if you want to do exact slicing.
What is the problem with the info window?
Additionally I miss a few save to web parameters like color depth, etc.
This is still not that, what I was waiting for. π
hamsta
Keil Miller Says:
…a selection tool for rounded rectangles.
You can use the square selection tool and then use the slider in refine selection | smooth to round the selection corners in real-time. But then you probably already knew that. π
Kento
Export for web! I can’t wait to try it.
TorbjΓΈrn Vik Lunde
I just want to say it’s great that you actually don’t release the product untill it’s really ready. I’d rather have a great product later, than a poor product sooner.
By the way: are you planning to at some point add CMYK-support, or will Pixelmator strictly be focused for general photography and online graphics? (This is a question and not a rethorical one trying to nudge you in a direction. I can abselutely understand if if you wish to not focus on too many aspects. That’s how bloat easily occurs anyway.)
And last: I have a suggestion. If you do implement layer styles at some point, please do not do it in the way Photoshop does, but rather in the direction of DrawIt. I find this to be much more flexible. (But then again; I wouldn’t be suprised if you guys came up with a completely new approach.)
Oh, and the drag-and-drop slices? Genius! I’ve never been so exited about an app-feature before.
Good luck!
Julian
I wet myself π
Scubasheep
I’ll be making the decision whether to buy Pixelmator based on this new release. Apple have done an excellent job with Snow Leopard, and I will only buy apps that do the business on my Mac.
I’m really pleased with what I have seen so far though and looking forward to the new release.
π
Ben
i just saw this and wow, i’m definitely psyched for it. can’t wait until the 8th! =]
hamsta
Pixelmator team, you had better notify your accountant and your investment manager, Scubasheep is about to make a decision on buying your product!!!
Leszek
You guys rule. Yeah!
mosscow
Save for web! SAVE FOR WEB!!!
Ray
Are we getting Aperture support in this version?
Bernhard
Unfortunately this release does not include layer styles which is the most important feature in my opinion to completely compete to Adobe Photoshop for “normal/home users”.
Hope this will be included in the next version – looking forward,
Bernhard.
hamsta
If Pixelmator is gonna be a Photoshop replacement then they should bump up the price to $99 at least.
MacW
Great work! Pixelmator is getting better and better – I’m looking forward to the Spider release!
Luke
Save for Web and Slices is what has been holding me back from using Pixelmator all the time. Can’t wait for Tuesday!
PsykX
Wow, this is certainly not what’s going to make Pixelmator a “pro” tool, but it helps a god damn lot!
It’s at least two steps in the right direction. Gotta love the fact that yes, you copy features already present in Photoshop, but you re-think them and then integrate them into Pixelmator, which makes this app really unique.
It seems to work like a charm, looking forward to the update.
Jace
Contrary to what some of the commenters have said, thank you for working out the bugs and not releasing a half-baked product into the wild like some other companies do.
@Saulius – I’ll be refreshing your homepage come Tuesday – any comment on what time of day you’ll release?
Derek
Can’t wait! The slice/export for web implementation is gorgeous! People keep coming back and saying “photoshop has had slices for years”, but that’s not the point. This is looking to be one solid feature! Great work!
kercal
@ Jace…
Personally I’m planning for 5pm and anything earlier is a bonus π
Luke H
Am excited about the update, some really useful new features, cant wait to play with it on tuesday. When will there be the options to change the spacing between text characters.?
keep up the good work
Bela Ujvary
I think that Pixelmator is a great example of how applications should behave/look like on the macintosh platform. I can see the amount of care/love and work you put into this app in every detail. Great work guys!
Unfortunately, until layer styles aren’t implemented I can’t start using it instead of Photoshop. (I guess there are many of us out here.) I was really hoping for Spider to give us layer styles in a DrawIt way. That would be supercool / flexible / relatively easy to implement by using CoreImage effects like DrawIt. Please guys! Tell us about this.
Dave
If your equivalent of the info window works well, I’m buying this app right away! Can’t wait to see what you guys did to 1.5!
-Dave
Mike
Nice stuff! I can wait – I understand if it needs more bugs ironed out.
Joris Landman
Now I can finally toss out Photoshop π
Dito @lardlad, please don’t sell out!
Anonymous Cowherd
> Unfortunately this release does not include layer styles which is the most important feature in my opinion to completely compete to Adobe Photoshop for βnormal/home usersβ.
Being a graphics noob, Layer Styles is the single most decisive factor for me too. Please, listen to your users on this one! Seriously, I count four mentions of layer styles even before me!
People were talking about this a lot in the previous thread too. The DrawIt method looks awesome.
dropbot
Layer Styles implemented in the Pixelmator way will be awesome but remember, Photoshop didn’t get Layer Styles until version 6 so give the Pixelmator guys time to implement it.
Rachel
Still no smudge i guess :/
Xav
Layer Styles…. Layer Styles… Layer Styles…
Please ?
foofoorabbit
Rachel, Xav…just cut it out.
batty
@foofoo – or was that *slice* :;-)
You are right though. Let’s all chill and wait until we have had a chance to play with 1.5. The boys have been working their collective butts off for months. Give them some cred and a few weeks to breathe.
I am sure that there are 1000 things they would like to have included. There is a time and a place for offering new ideas. This is not it.
Celebrate the work they have done and offer helpful (vs spoiled brat) ideas when the time is right.
Now, back to our regular programming. 48 hours or so to go.
Al
Well said batty. I’d rather the boys gave us gradual improvements that they can fine tune incrementally than some uber-bloated piece of software that promises the earth but chokes on its own code. We’ve already got that in another company’s offerings, I wouldn’t mind betting that’s why most of us are here in the first place. Keep it clean and mean, and add features as and when they become sufficiently important as the next missing link.
Sure I would love Layer Styles, it’s about the only thing I miss from CS these days, but the new features of 1.5 look pretty focused on most peoples needs and I’m really looking forward to working with it – I’ve got a few web sites waiting in the wings just to try out the web orientated new additions.
Chen
Tomorrow is Spider day, I’m so excited, can’t wait! π
Radu
Wow, yummy! That slicing tool looks fantastic! Can’t wait to play with it! Thanks a lot for making pixelmator really, REALLY useful.
Doug
Will Pixelmator 1.5 see its Automator related features become “Universal”. I prefer to use your “Resize Images” Automator plugin over that of built-in plugin that ships in 10.5 (which remains unchanged in 10.6).
Thanks, and keep up the great work!
erv
oh yeah, the end of a monday rarely felt this good…
Ran a trial the other day and will purchase when the update is out. Hope you don’t pull something weird with the price (upwards speaking :P) Real good piece of kit, especially at this attractive price point. And I’m a professional, for all you non-pro-tool commenters out there. Hope to learn the possibilities and advantages even better, the web-features will work great, I imagine!
Michael Kwok
I’m looking forward to two features… Layer Styles, and more filters…. I can’t seem to import any in, and its bugging me… Does anybody know a site with third party pixelmator filters??
Michael Kwok
But don’t take it the wrong way… PIXELMATOR ROCKS!!! Thank you for all the hard work.
Jow!!!
Almost all of the filters are made with Quartz Composer, if not all. Just install the Apple Dev tools and play with Core Image Fun House or Quartz Composer, and you can see how effects are built.
Loweded Wookie
I hate living in the future. It’s Tuesday the 8th here in New Zealand so I won’t get the update until Wednesday. π
batty
Wot’s it like…the future? π
Chen
Where do the Pixelmator team live, I mean the time zone? π
Alejandro JL
I do not hold!
No aguanto mΓ‘s!
Thanks Pixelmator Team
pjc
It’s Tuesday the 8th here now π
Tomas Jakobs
for every minute i’m clicking my “check update” button..
come on Pixelmator Bro… bring it on… π
Swongle
In lack of patience, I did some googling to find out when 1.5 might be out. The time in Lithuania (where the devs seem to be located) right now is 11:02 AM (EEST). In other words, it should be here within the next 13 hours π
Good thing I got the RSS properly setup.
*keeps fingers crossed for aspect ratio selection/cropping and image mode (and palette) support*
gish
Features are one thing, but I sure hope they fixed the annoyances like not being able to scroll the brush palette and such. π
